“Catch the Reading Bug” summer activities at the Seneca Falls Library include reading programs for children and teens and theatrical performances. All programs are free and open to the public.
“A Buggy Day at the Library” program has begun. It is designed especially for children ages 3 to 10 and features interactive stories, songs and jokes about bugs. It is performed by the puppeteer group Freddy and Friends. Families and children of all ages are invited.
Also this month, registrations are being accepted at the library circulation desk for the summer reading program. Reading activities, games and crafts will be centered on the New York state reading program theme “Catch the Reading Bug.” Children entering second through fifth-grades in September are invited to participate. Sessions will be held 11 a.m. to noon on six consecutive Saturdays beginning July 12. More information is available online or by calling the library.
“Metamorphosis,” an independent reading program for middle and high school students begins July 12 and continues through Aug. 16.
Each time a student takes a book out, a ticket in their name is added to win one of two MP3 players. Names will be drawn Aug. 18.
July activities include two events, “Graphic Novels are In!” and a performance by the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse.
The library's expanded collection of graphic novels - written and illustrated in comic book-style panels - will be unveiled at 7 p.m. July 7.
Members of the library's teen book club will introduce the collection during a brief ceremony.
Snacks and graphic novel trivia games will follow. Dozens of graphic novels, the fastest-growing genre in the book world, were purchased through grants from the Friends of the Seneca Falls Library group and the Finger Lakes Library Service. Graphic novels are published for all age levels and are especially popular with teens.
Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre will perform “The Emperor's New Clothes” at 10 a.m. July 18, at the library. In a beautiful fairy tale city, there lived an emperor who was so vain that all he worried about were his clothes. This show is open to all, and no registration needed.
The Teen Book, which began meeting monthly in January, will hold meetings in July and August.
The July meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. July 7; the August meeting will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4. Both will meet in the library conference room. The teen club discusses books its members are reading.
Themes which influence books read by teens are also examined. Teen club projects this year include assisting with the Saturday summer reading program.
