The winners of this year's Owasco Flyer bicycle race will split $1,100 in prize money.
The 36-mile race starts at the northeast corner of Owasco Lake and finishes at the top of the fourth hill on Swartout Road. The first mile is a controlled rolling start. The route includes 14 hills and 1,610 feet of vertical climbing.
According to the Owasco Flyer Web site, “This annual 36-mile “citizens” cycling road race around beautiful Owasco Lake is a popular race, not only for serious, elite local cyclists, but also for casual non-competitive riders. Our goal is to promote cycling in a healthy manner and have fun doing it.”
Pre-registration for the event will remain open on www.bikereg.com through 8 p.m. Friday, June 20. Pre-registration is $25. Day-of race registration is available for $35 starting at 8 a.m. The first 200 registered receive T-shirts and pint glasses.
Some race regulations: No recumbent bikes, aero bars or rear disc wheels are allowed. The event will use timing chips, which riders will pick up with their numbers before the race.
All proceeds benefit the summer camp of the YMCA, which also sponsors the race. Refreshments will be available for all riders after the race.
