ALBANY -- The Legislature and Gov. David Paterson are agreeing to a bill that would automatically revoke the certification of a teacher convicted of having sex with a student.
State Senate Education Committee Chairman Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie confirms that the deal would be announced Wednesday afternoon.
Saland said school districts had been required to hold misconduct hearings for teachers, administrators and other school officials to revoke their state certification even after conviction of a felony. The lengthy process cost local taxpayers an average of $150,000 and some had to be held in prisons.
Another measure that would revoke the certification of administrators convicted of larceny through school finances also has legislative agreement.
