A prestigious honor, Ivy League Player of the Year, and a league championship - not bad for one season. Not bad for one career.

Skaneateles native and Columbia baseball player Henry Perkins was named the Ivy League Player of the Year. Perkins is a second baseman and a pitcher.
Skaneateles native Henry Perkins accomplished quite a lot this season.

A senior co-captain and second basemen for the Columbia University baseball team was a unanimous All-Ivy League first team selection and was voted Player of the Year.

“It feels great to have been named player of the year,” Perkins said. “It feels even better that my team won the title and that my accomplishments were able to help lead to my team's accomplishments.”

As for personal accolades, Perkins has plenty. He batted .384 in conference play, including six doubles, three triples and two home runs. In the field, he had a .980 fielding percentage and was an extremely effective spot pitcher.

In the decisive game three of the championship series against Dartmouth, Perkins was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and a double. He also went on to pitch the final four innings of the game, giving up only one hit and pitching his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. His season statistics include a .363 batting average and a fielding percentage of .948 with three home runs and 34 RBIs.

This is the first title the Lions have won since the 1970s, so not only is it a big deal for Perkins and his teammates, but also for the Columbia baseball program.

“It feels great to have done it my senior year,” Perkins said. “We had a large group of seniors this year and we worked hard to finally reach this goal. When I started out as a freshman we didn't have a very good program at all. It is nice to be a part of that success.”

Perkins has been playing sports with a lot of success for nearly his entire life. During his years at Skaneateles High School from 2000 to 2004, Perkins managed to earn himself all-league status in soccer, hockey and baseball. He was also named all-state in baseball when the Lakers won the Section III championship. Perkins was also the captain of all three teams his senior year.

All of these accomplishments he attributes to the constant support given to him by his family who raised him on baseball..

“I knew coming out of high school that I wanted to continue playing in college, it has been a big part of my life and made it much more enjoyable to be able to continue to play,” Perkins said. “I have been playing sports, especially baseball, since I was a little kid. It is rooted in my family, my dad is a baseball enthusiast who also played in college. I have really been raised with the interest..”

Perkins is disappointed to have to stop playing baseball now, especially with a team full of guys that he has built friendships with, but he is looking forward to starting on his career path in a newer interest - trading.

After going to school as a political science major, Perkins has found an interest in trading and is hoping to find success on Wall Street after having to say good-bye to playing for the Lions.

“I built a lot of close friendships on the team and it is going to be hard to stop playing,” Perkins said. “Ending my career on top does make it better though.”
