Auburn school budget rejected again; Southern Cayuga and J-E budgets pass

The Auburn Enlarged City School District budget was defeated Tuesday night 2,141 to 1,877.
Voters had rejected a proposed budget May 20 and the school board decided to put the same budget up for a second vote without making any changes. In a series of public meetings, the board had sought to convince voters that the initial budget was relatively lean and did not contain unnecessary expenditures.

Tuesday's re-vote was rejected by 264 votes with 154 absentee and affidavit ballots yet to be counted.

Voters on Tuesday were also deciding on school budgets in Jordan-Elbridge and Southern Cayuga.

Both of those districts had cut spending after their first budgets were rejected and submitted new budgets with smaller tax increases.

The revised Southern Cayuga budget passed 518 to 352.

The revised Jordan-Elbridge budget passed 684 to 479.

" Number one, all of you who think that turf is bad, we have to be one of the only districts that does not have at least one field with turf on it. It would be a positive impact on all of the sports teams that could use it. Silentmajority's comment says it all. Number two, why dont us adults stop thinking about ourselves and more about the kids, voting down the budget was a sad mistake because now the kids will suffer in many areas of their education that many of you will never understand.GO MAMAFOUR!! "

" None of you know what you are talking about. I went to this school. I've been in the halls. I've seen each and every room. 35 dollars is the average increase each taxpayer would have gotten. Have we become so greedy that we fail to recognize that our children ARE our future? "

" Why do these districts need to increase our taxes year after year?! I just don't get it? There is a budget. Stick with the budget within the taxes already paid. I can see a slight raise every few years, but why every year? The teachers threaten the kids that the popular teachers will be cut if the budget is not passed. This is usually not the case, however, instead of cutting valuable teachers, eliminate the heavily salaried, non-effective, administrators. It should be noted, their trips and expenses are paid for in full with our tax money. I sincerely hope this is heavily audited! "

" Sure, the first thing they will do is go after the kids stuff!! "But what about the kids???" Go after cuts where they really should be made, in the administration, and leave the kids alone!! "

MISSEY1941 wrote on Jun 18, 2008 10:37 AM:

" I see they want to cut field trips etc.
Just cut the 14 new administrative positions that were created this year and you will have more than enough $$$$$$$$$$$ for childrens programs.
Pabis, you still don't get it. The well is dry and the public has no more $$$. "

" I don't feel the problem is the teachers, but more like the administration. There are too many there that are sitting there in newly created positions that we really don't need. Could be the "good ol' boy" system at work here, giving jobs to friends?? Too much bureaucracy for a little town like Auburn. "

" Turf was NOT in last nites vote. They dropped that capital budget from vote till when? I am happy a no was rung in however. To me it seems that these elected school board individuals believe they are above the intelligence of the so called regular person. I have seen (and known) in other school districts - where they have their little bifocals perched down on their nose looking at John Q public as the bafoon brigade. I think this perception was recognized from day one as the school budget is the only one voted on by said bafoons - to keep them in their place. Pabis should shuffle his feet and feel humble because he was knocked down a notch by us confused citizens. lmao. Its a shame we have the highest school taxes in the nation NOT because its for those poor eager little kids that they try to make us imagine but rather for the overinflated salaries and retirement benefits these "educators" receive. When the teachers make more than 50% of their constituents salary base - there is big a prob there. "

" Mamafour, will you give your little brats steroids, too?

I vote for all natural. Keep your kids on grass. "

" This was a good result. I just got done voting "NO" on the turf for the 3rd time Mamafour. Maybe you need to educate yourself on issues as one of us is obviously confused.

p.s. To be competitive-kids need taxes cut so they can still have a home to live in. "

" In response to anonymous, I'd say that judging by the number of non graduates and dropouts in the Auburn School District, most of the kids are already on grass. "

" The board made a fatal mistake by not paring down the budget and bringing a smaller number to the voters. By bringing the same thing back to the voters only galvanized the no vote. And a few meatheads still think turf was on the vote. I'm surprised they were able to place a ballot with no brain. "

yetanotherpinhead wrote on Jun 18, 2008 12:29 AM:

" The budget was responsible, and actually saw less of a tax levy increase than in many other districts which had their budgets easily passed. It was even less than the average levy increase across NYS. Why is it there's the sound of crickets when the public is asked to participate and explain their "problem" with this budget at board meetings? I think more than a few people are just taking out their frustrations over gas and food costs on the schools, and not taking into consideration the schools are subject to the same cost increases as we all are; moreso even. The tax levies in this district have actually dropped every year since 2005, and 2008's tax increase was the lowest yet! So what the heck is the problem? "

" Hey mamafour. Glad to see you understand the understated art of sarcasm.

Speaking for myself, I voted against the budget because the board clearly cannot take 'no' for an answer. We voted down turf. They ignored that. We then voted down the budget. They ignored that. The school board and administration clearly have no respect for the voters. Why on earth should I have any respect for them and the bloated organization they represnet?? "

mamafour wrote on Jun 17, 2008 10:33 PM:

" The turf was not even part of the vote - maybe if people educated themselves more - it would have passed!
p.s. To be competitive - kids should be on turf. "
