CORTLAND - Even with an uneven ending to its season, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team hardly has anything to hang its heads about.
Not only did the Lakers win their seventh straight Section III, Class C title - in wonderfully dramatic fashion - Skaneateles (19-6) dominated the state tournament in the first three games, outscoring opponents 50-15, to earn a fourth straight trip to the finals. They had also lost back-to-back games just once this season and before the title game, had won 11 straight. Not many programs can duplicate that brand of success.
“This year, up until today was spectacular,” Skaneateles head coach Bridget Marquardt said. “I'm very proud of them. From where we started to where we finished was great.”
Despite a loss to eventual Class B champion Brighton to begin their season, the Lakers began the season as they usually do - strong.
Even a 21-5 loss to Shoreham-Wading River in the NYSPHSAA title game doesn't deter an outstanding season that saw another Section III, Class C title, even after barely scraping out wins in the first two games of the postseason.
“I think if you asked anyone, not a lot of people would have thought we'd be back here today,” Marquardt said. “So it doesn't take away from the whole season, but a loss like this is disappointing.”
The Lakers are graduating 10 players - starters Kelsey Nangle, Emma Hueber, Shannon Tierney, Jenna Lotkowictz, Amy Riehlman and Laura Trenti, as well as contributors Alex Sherman, Bailey Saulsbury, Brittany Lavaute and Margaret Shanley.
“I feel bad for them for this loss,” Marquardt said. “They wanted it so badly, especially since we lost to them last year. But most of them have been with me for four years and I'm very proud of them #) they're going to continue their careers in college.”
With a strong returning class, including Maddy Morrissey - who was the Lakers' youngest starter this season as a sophomore - Lindsay Angelillo, and goalie Heather Mullen, don't count the Lakers out next season, either.
“I told the girls that we'll learn from this loss,” Marquardt said. “And we'll be back.”
