Do you remember the Sonny and Cher song, “The Beat Goes On?” At the last Auburn school budget vote, a beat was skipped and a large murmuring was detected - that being a significant percentage of the voting public. A congenital defect in the financing of public education was further exposed and expressed in various letters to the editor.

First let's start with the newscast. When the state of New York increased the tax on cigarettes, this is a great thing, they said, more people will quit now. The next news brief, same broadcast: New York will generate billions of tax dollars. Next news brief, yet to be broadcasted, “Crime is up more now than ever before, reason: robbery of cigarettes, and gas to get away.” Oh no! Now there's not enough for drugs!

I'd like to say this to all people who own properties here in Auburn and surrounding areas - why do you charge so much for even a small space? You'd like to have people bring businesses and jobs to our area, but for real how do you think we can? Don't charge the little people so much to rent a storefront (downtown area) and maybe some more businesses would open up for our city.
