Our View: Hits & Misses

Friday, June 13, 2008 11:52 AM EDT

HIT: To the city of Auburn's new summer cleanup program that started last week. The program's goal is to get rid of excess yard waste and construction materials.
A different neighborhood is targeted each Saturday as public work crews are out starting at 7 a.m. picking up the items left on the curb.

It's a great idea to give Auburn residents an opportunity to get rid of items that can hurt the appearance of a property. We hope the program is a success and that homeowners take advantage of it.

MISS: To the string of storms that came through the area Tuesday, causing property damage and power outages in some areas. Compared to the South and Midwest, which have dealt with deadly, catastrophic tornadoes, it appears we lucked out.

But for anyone who lost power or had to clean up damage, this was as powerful a storm as we've had in recent memory.

HIT: To Auburn school board member Susan Scheuerman, who led a movement to beautify Genesee Street Elementary School. With financial and logistical support from the Carol Roberts and Emerson foundations, the city and the Auburn Beautification Committee, Scheuerman's dream came true.

Teachers and students spent a day planting flowers and trees, making the school look better and giving them a new sense of pride in it.

MISS: To an alleged “road rage” incident in Auburn on Monday night. After one vehicle hit another, police said the driver of the car that had been hit pulled the other driver out of his vehicle and assaulted him to the extent he had to be taken to the hospital. This comes only days after another road rage incident in the Syracuse area.

Motorists need to keep their cool when other drivers do things they don't like.

Escalating any incident on the roadway is never the right choice.
