AUBURN - For Brittany Jorgensen, graduating from the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services is more than just a monumental occasion.

Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES students file into the Auburn High School auditorium for their award ceremony as the first class to finish at the new facility, Thursday night.
“Today marks the beginning of the rest of my life,” the 18-year-old from Port Byron said after she officially graduated from the New Visions Business and Media Communications program Thursday.

“We've learned so much and now we can take what we learned to pursue other degrees,” she said.

Jorgensen will do that by studying business administration at Cayuga Community College through its honors program.

More than 230 BOCES students from the nine component school

districts marched across Auburn High School's auditorium stage Thursday night, accepting myriad scholarships and certificates of completion for their years of hard work.

With each step across the stage, every hug and handshake shared between students, instructors, and BOCES board of education members, students took a giant leap toward their future, whether it be out in the workforce or higher education.

For Rob Thurston, a graduate of the Health Occupations program, BOCES gave him opportunities to explore his interests in a hands-on way. Now a state certified nursing assistant, Thurston can pursue his passions at Simmons Institute of Funeral Service in Syracuse, studying mortuary science.

“No other class or school can even come close to the kind of education BOCES can give,” he said as a ceremony speaker.

Crediting his program instructors, Thurston said attending BOCES has shown him the world outside of high school.

The Class of 2008 has a unique perspective about learning at BOCES. This class is the first to graduate from the new facility on Genesee Street Road in Aurelius, and the last class to experience learning from the old South Street campus in Auburn.

“They have truly seen the best of both worlds,” Director of Career and Technical Education Steve Woodard said.

New Visions graduate and ceremony speaker Rachel Humennyj echoed that statement.

“As the first graduating class from the new BOCES building, we should be proud of our accomplishments,” said the 18-year-old from Union Springs who will attend SUNY Albany in the fall.

“We've learned from the greatest,” she later added, “and I'm confident we will each do well in whatever path we choose.”

Nate Sherboneau, 20, of Moravia, is certainly ready for his future. A graduate of BOCES' Autobody Repair Program, Sherboneau will work in his father's shop, Sherby's Collision, in Auburn.

“It feels great, it really feels great,” he said of graduating. “Life moves on now. Life really starts now.”
