Year 'round alternate side parking not a good idea

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:47 AM EDT

Odd/even parking now in effect year 'round ... good one, City Hall. What's next, odd/even garbage pickup?
As if parking your vehicle in front of someone else's residence doesn't stir that resident's ire; imagine what'll happen when someone places garbage on their lawn. Ah yes, but money is money. And there'll be plenty of money rolling into city hall from all those parking tickets and those receiving tickets from not placing their garbage on the right side of the street.

I know that after collecting so many parking tickets, a donut (a big yellow one) gets placed on your tire, your car gets towed to the impound lot and stays there until all the fines (tow and other fees) get paid.

I'm not sure what happens when you've acquired so many tickets for your trash being on the wrong side. Maybe that big yellow donut gets placed around your front door and your front door gets taken to the impound lot.

What is the reality of all this? It's a major inconvenience to have to run out at 5:58 p.m. every day to move the vehicle to the other side of the street. There's not always a convenient spot available. Sometimes it's halfway down the street and on occasion a block away! People used to having that particular parking spot usually have a few choice words to say. If not, they'll express their ire another way like breaking a wiper blade off, egging and soaping your vehicle or letting air out of your tires.

Tell Officer Friendly thanks, city hall. Thank you Mr. Understanding Citizen. You've all contributed negatively to problems that seem to have no happy ending, ever.

High prices, bad government, people blaming people for petty reasons? Ain't life grand?

" If you are 70 and can't walk, then find a home with a driveway. The public is not required to provide anyone with front of your house on street parking! "

" Sure, most 70-year-olds have legs, and some of them are even in good shape. I know one couple about that age who could each run circles around me (40s). But most folks in their 70s are NOT in as good shape as my friends and many have mobility pains and problems. "

" Farmer's gal...

What would you have done 100 years ago without a car at all. be lucky in you live in such an easy era, i guess. "

" It's my understanding that generally, people that live in houses have driveways to park their cars in. I'm sure some people don't, but year-round alternate side parking is everywhere in cities like Syracuse, and you don't see people starting campaigns to do away with it. "

" last time i looked, people in their 70s still had legs. i wonder why? "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jun 11, 2008 7:59 AM:

" Or someone with a broken leg (I was able to drive an automatic when I was in the wheelchair with my broken leg, but it was tricky getting to and from and in and out of my car -- having to cross the street in my wheelchair to get to my car would have been a serious problem).

Or to someone who is sick and bedridden with flu for a week.

Or someone who wants to leave his/her car parked at home while away on vacation for 2 weeks.

It doesn't seem very fair or practical to me. "

" It's a major inconvenience to move your car once per day? Wow, its a good thing you live in a small town, you wouldn't make it elsewhere.

Stop whining, the short walk down the street to get in your car will do you good. "

" Back when I had an apartment and parked on the street I received two parking tickets in two years. Both were in the first week of alternate parking and they were both written in the very early AM.

Lynch's argument doesn't hold any water. "

" The constitution does not guarantee a parking space directly in front of your house. You will live if you have to walk a few feet to your car. "
