WILLIAMSVILLE -- Western New York grocery chain Tops Markets has stopped selling some tomatoes and salsa while federal officials look for the source of a 17-state salmonella outbreak.
Tops says no one has gotten sick from its tomatoes. But, as a precaution, it has pulled organic round tomatoes from produce departments, along with one brand of salsa -- East Coast Fresh Cuts Tops Salsa.
The organic tomatoes are grown in locations being investigated by the FDA following reports that 167 people have been infected with salmonella. Red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes from certain states and countries are the suspected origins. There are no reported cases in New York.
There are 76 Tops supermarkets in western and central New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.
