In response to the recent article submitted by Southern Cayuga Central School Board member elect Joe Lonsky, I have a few comments and observations. To begin, I would like to say that your presence was missed at last Monday night's meeting. It would have been a great learning experience for you to see how many taxpayers don't share in your philosophy.
It would have been a great experience for you to listen to the other people you have been elected to represent. It would have also been a great lesson for you to see how a team can pull together for the sake of our children.
Remember a board is made up of seven, not four. It would have also been a great opportunity for you to see how much our community truly cares, especially when they are presented with fact.
At this time, I would respectfully ask that you put away your boxing gloves, and come out to play fair. You are soon to represent this community and district. You need to be more aware of how you present yourself. Though your “majority” did not vote “no” again in adopting the budget, are you still pledging to actively campaign against this budget? We didn't get to the 0 percent or even under the 4 percent that you referred to in your article. So now what? If you meant what you said, then you will clearly advocate a “no” vote mentality, but be advised that the “no” vote will get you at 7.9 percent as contingency, on the levy, which is higher than the new proposed budget amount. Maybe you should have understood the numbers before you expressed your opinions to the community? Or maybe it's just because you care about the children and their future?

Everyone "sort of knows" Joe in the area, and one of the things that stands out about him is his willingness to question everything. Nothing is sacred - "business as usual" won't apply. As a parent, quite frankly, I find that refreshing.
There is a lot to be unhappy with in the district and there has been a lot of tiptoeing around unpopular positions. For many of us, we just want to see every idea viewed and reviewed. How can we find solutions to our biggest problems if no one is willing to rock the boat a little and ask why we have to do things the same way? Out of crazy suggestions come viable solutions - that is the very nature of invention and we should embrace that and look ahead to what Southern Cayuga can be, not fight about what it is now.
I, for one, look forward to Joe Lonsky's involvement on the BOE and wish him the best of luck in this endeavor. "
