I am outraged for being classified as “confused” for voting against the Auburn Enlarged City School District budget. When spending is out of control, there is no other option.
Why out of control? The Auburn school district received almost 7 percent more state aid for the 2008-09 school year. That's about 2.5 times the consumer price index. Was this enough for the school district? Of course not. They went after the local taxpayers for an estimated 3.28 percent more. I'd wager if the superintendent or the school board were asked for an explanation for the spending increase, the two answers these people would give would be the usual “think of the children” and “it's only a few dollars more.”
The latest fiasco about the deadline to receive state aid for the capital improvement project, which turned out not to be true, indicates someone was or is playing games. If the superintendent misled the school board, he should be terminated. If the school board knew, they should all resign.
If the elected members of the school board and the superintendent they hired can't be up front with the taxpayers, they should not be in control of millions of dollars of our monies.
