Savannah is a great place to live. Our Community Days are happening next week in Savannah on June 13 through 15. It is a weekend set apart to celebrate this community. Starting Friday, June 13, is the townwide yard sales, and attendees will be able to pick up a map of all the registered yard sales at Dave's, the Savannah Bank or the Post Office.
Saturday, June 14, is the main day of activities located at the Potato Festival Field starting with an Agriculture/Municipal Auction at 9:30 a.m. with Jim Hoyt as the auctioneer. He has been collecting lots of small equipment to sell.
The New Coach Beauter 5K Race will begin at 9:30 a.m. and also be held at the Potato Fest Field. This event is organized by Kris King.
If you are a runner, here is a chance to run in honor of Coach Beauter, who made many of us run when we were at a younger age.
At 10 a.m. the parade will start at the Town Barns and travel down Main Street to Route 31 and then down to the Potato Fest Field.
A new feature will be some antique cars as they prepare to participate in the car cruising, which will be on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Prizes will be given for those in attendance. Our Savannah Treasures will again be featured along with a float featuring balloons for all our young children.
Over in the tractor track, Greg Hurley and the central New York Garden Tractor Pullers, Inc. will be featuring a Mini-Tractor Pull. Weigh-in is at 10:30 a.m. with the pull beginning at 11 a.m. If you have never seen a mini-tractor pull with lawn-mover bodies, stop by to watch. It is amazing what they do.
Once you arrive on the field, you will discover craft and flea vendors and the cake raffle. Savannah's Own Magician, Michael Amico, will be presenting a magic show at 11:30 a.m. Come and see what he has up his sleeve. And the Bounce House will be open for the children to have lots of fun in.
At 11:30 a.m., we will announce the winner of our two contests.
Children under the age of 14 have drawn pictures featuring turtles, common to the Montezuma Wetlands Area. One stamp drawing will be converted into a stamp which will be for sale and can be used. Ribbon prizes will be given to each participant with the winning artist receiving a stamp along with a cash award.
The photography contest awards will be announced with its theme of a “Special Place” in Savannah. Cash awards will be given for the first, second and third place winners.
At noon the Dunkin Booth opens for a chance to have some fun with some of your favorite people in town.
The Bike Races will begin at 12:30 p.m. for youth, and then children's games will follow where a quarter will make you a winner. There will be prizes for everyone.
Also, the Savannah Fire Department will feature an open house at the Fire Hall on Route 89.
Win some free gas or a meal by participating in this year's new feature - A Wacky Bocce Ball Tournament, which will begin at 3 p.m. It will consist of two person teams. A random drawing will determine which teams will play against each other.
Teams will play until one team has a total of 16 points. The entry fee is $5. If you have questions, call Pat Stevens at 365-2683 and Colette Amico at 365-2544.
Community Day in Savannah will be special this year as it is every year.
It is that time of the year that we take time out to see what our children are able to accomplish, what are young people enjoy doing and excelling in and all generations can sit and enjoy being a part of the town of Savannah.
