The third-seeded Southern Cayuga softball team lost to top-seeded Tioga, 6-3 in the Section IV, Class C quarterfinals.
Lianna May pitched the first two innings for the Chiefs, recording one strikeout and Julie Hewitt came into the circle adding seven strikeouts. The duo combined to allow just four hits.
“This was the best Julie has pitched all year,” Southern Cayuga coach Dave Hewitt said.
The Tigers, who are ranked 19th in the state, played the Chiefs during the regular season and split the series, handing Southern Cayuga its only regular season loss, 4-2.
This time, the Chiefs could get the ball out there in play, they just could not get the girls around the bases.
“We had four runners left on base with two outs left and couldn't get the girls in,” Dave Hewitt said. “We hit on her, which is exactly what we wanted to do. We just could not string those hits together.”
Southern Cayuga's hits came from Lindsey Doeing, who had two doubles, Jessica Currie added a triple and a single and Kim Willis contributed two hits.
Willis also had a rough night at second base with three errors that cost the Chiefs.
“Those errors were crucial,” Dave Hewitt said. “We really needed to keep our errors down because we knew they would take advantage of them and unfortunately that is exactly what happened.”
Southern Cayuga kept the game close until the fourth inning, when they allowed four unearned runs. Attempting to balance that out and rally back, the Chiefs shut the Tigers down 1-2-3 the next two innings but it did not amount to enough.
“We out-hit them and out-played them but if you don't get the girls, in it doesn't matter,” Dave Hewitt said.
Despite the loss, Southern Cayuga finishes the season with a record of 18-3, which is leaps and bounds better than last year. “I am so proud of them, they have bettered their record from a team who had 10 less wins in the past,” Dave Hewitt said. “They are a great team to coach and I will miss the seniors.”
The three Chiefs' seniors - Willis, Julie Hewitt, and Doeing - will play in the all-star game at 6 p.m. tonight in Spencer-Van Etten. All three players will be playing softball in college next year - Willis will play for Geneseo, Julie Hewitt is attending Tompkins-Cortland Community College and Doeing will be playing for Monroe Community College, which has won the National Championship three years in a row.
“It is nice to know that the girls will be playing in college,” Dave Hewitt said.
“I know they will all be successful there and I couldn't be more proud of the team this season and what they have accomplished.”
