Southern Cayuga's Miriam Larson-Koester won the discus in the New York State track and field qualifiers (120-11), setting a new school record by over five feet at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Thursday.
Larson-Koester also placed sixth in the shot put (34-9.75). With her win in the discus, she will compete in the New York State Meet in Buffalo June 13 and 14.
“Wow, she did a great job,” Southern Cayuga head coach Bill Mullarney said.
“She hasn't been beaten all year and this is a real pressure-packed situation with a lot of talent, so it's a big deal. I am so excited for her.”
Also competing in the qualifier for the Chiefs was Nicole Hoey, who placed 16th in the 400m (1:03.41) and for the boys, Griffon Farlow finished ninth in the 1600m (4:43.14) - both times were personal bests for the runners.
“We had a little slimmer of a crowd because of injuries,” Mullarney said.
