A pair of graduating seniors at Auburn High School have been named the 2008 recipients of the Ruth and Charles B. Goldman Memorial Scholarships.
Nicholas Oristian and George Tehan will each receive $1,000 toward their first year of college studies.
Oristian, son of John and Lynn Oristian, of Orchard Street, plans to attend Gettysburg College. Tehan, son of Andrew and Nancy Tehan, of South Hurd Circle, will enroll at Siena College.
The scholarships, named in memory of two lifelong Auburnians who died in 2006 and 2007, are designated for graduating seniors at AHS who have demonstrated a significant interest in the public affairs of the community, the nation and/or the world.
Oristian helped to produce “Political Party Time,” a segment of the school's daily public access television program that discusses current political issues. He has interviewed several political candidates as well as a refugee from the Sudan. Oristian also worked on the campaign of local political office-seekers. He was a member of the Leadership Cayuga class of 2007.
Tehan is president of the AHS chapter of Model United Nations. He also has participated in the Cayuga County Model Senate and the National Student Leadership Conference in International Affairs and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. He volunteers with several local organizations.
The Goldman scholarships, which will be awarded annually, are funded by family members and friends of Ruth and Charles Goldman.
