SYRACUSE - Now, it's the boys' turn.

Skaneateles senior Ian Newland runs back to celebrate the Lakers' 11-7 victory over Christian Brothers Academy for the Section III, Class C championship on Wednesday night.
Three days after the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team claimed its sixth straight Section III, Class C title, the Laker boys followed suit for the school's first-ever double lacrosse championships.

It might not have been as dramatic as the girls' win, but it was certainly as impressive as the Lakers trailed for about 1:30 all game, tearing off seven goals in the third quarter en route to an 11-7 win to earn their own sectional championship over Christian Brothers Academy at Coyne Field in Syracuse on Wednesday.

It's the first title for the Lakers since winning back-to-back championships in 2001 and '02.

“This feels great,” Lakers junior Oliver Moore said following the celebration. “We hate CBA.”

Next, Skaneateles will play Section X's Salmon River at 6 p.m., Saturday at Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square in the first round of the NYSPHSAA Class C tournament.

The third-seeded Brothers, who were the two-time defending sectional champs heading into the game, edged the Lakers, 12-11 in the rivals' meeting during the regular season.

“Our defensive today isn't the same group that we had earlier in the season,” Lakers coach Ron Doctor said.

“We expected an even matchup, but we saw some spirited play in the third quarter when things were going our way.”

Things seemed to be going Skaneateles' way for most of the game, beginning with a Kelly Donigan unassisted goal 6:19 into the game. Donigan and Moore led the offensive charge with a hat trick apiece. The Lakers led after the first period when Moore found the net on a Patrick Emmer pass with 3:12 left, but the lead wouldn't last too long.

Led by senior midfielder Ben Ashenburg, the Brothers scored three quick goals - all in under a minute of one another - in the second quarter to take their only lead, 4-2. Ashenburg tallied four goals and an assist in the game, but scored two of the team's three second quarter goals, and passed for the other. CBA didn't find the net again until David Biegler took a shot from Nate Frechette with 10:29 left in the game.

With all of the Lakers' scoring in the third quarter, it was almost easy to overlook the increasingly tough defense. Junior Lex Johnson led an effort that slowed the Brothers offense to the tune of just 20 total shots, compared to 44 for Skaneateles.

“We just played good team defense,” Johnson said. “We had a lot of help. They scored the most goals on us all year earlier and we just had a lot of quick slides out there today. It's great, because no one even talked about us coming in, but we shocked LaFayette and now we have it all. We knew we could come in here and win this one, too.”

After shocking the top-seeded Lancers in the semifinals, No. 4 Skaneateles (16-5) had the confidence to beat just about anyone. Even with tallying three goals in the final 12 minutes, CBA never came close to winning its third-straight title.

“These kids are somewhat unassuming,” Doctor said. “They're a patient team. Instead of getting frustrated when we were down, they just kept working at it. That's something we need to maintain as we go.”

Emmer led all scoring with four points, on one goal and three assists. First year Laker Thomas Schoener put up a goal and two assists, Keith Buehler contributed two goals and senior midfielder Eric Richards scored one goal and tossed for two others.

In the cage, Josh Kimm made five saves, compared to nine for Brothers' goalie Griffin Ferrigan.

The Lakers also picked up 40 ground balls, while allowing the Brothers to get just 27.

“We were the four seed coming in and we felt we had come along during the course of the season,” Doctor said.

“It was going to be a building thing with our kids and sometimes, we responded a little slowly, when we came in with five losses. But things are getting better for our program.”
