The Skaneateles girls lacrosse team proved it knows how to spread out the scoring on Tuesday.
The Lakers' Lindsay Angelillo and Emma Hueber each recorded hat tricks in 21-2 victory over Section X's Canton in the first round of the NYSPHSAA Class C state regionals at Solvay High School.
Hueber added two assists to her three goals.
“I told the girls to just go out there and assist everyone,” Lakers coach Bridget Marquardt said. “I wanted them to just spread it out, pass it and move the ball.”
The Lakers (17-5) did just that with a total of 13 assists, including sophomore Maddy Morrissey's team-leading three helpers. Shannon Tierney joined Hueber with two assists while also scoring a goal. Aly Davis, Kelsey Nangle, Jenna Lotkowictz, Morrissey, Grace Kelly and Bailey Saulsbury all scored two goals while Nangle, Kat Pille, Lotkowictz and Diane Vitkus finished with one assist each.
Laura Trenti and Erin Callahan both scored a goal had one assist.
“It's nice when you're able to spread it out like we did,” Marquardt said. “Something we always want to accomplish is give everyone a chance to play. It's good for our program and the team.”
All the scoring took any pressure off Heather Mullen in the net, who finished with just one save.
“We kept the ball away from that end of the field,” Marquardt said. “We attacked them a lot and I felt our defense did a good job of that.”
The Lakers have secured themselves a spot in the state tournament against Corning East (14-6) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Vestal.
The Lakers will have one day off before they get right back on the field. Skaneateles hasn't had a break in nine days, including Sunday's win in the Section III, Class C championship against Marcellus.
“We have a few bumps and bruises here and there,” Marquardt said. “Plus they need a little mental break from everything.”
