A few years ago landscaping was put in down near Bombardier on the Arterial and it looked so nice at the time it was done. It has been several years since anyone has maintained it, and now it is all overgrown and looks terrible when you're coming into the city -- seems like such a waste.
Regarding the alternate side parking ordinance. Why doesn't Auburn just designate the narrow streets as one-way?
Has anyone noticed that the more liberal human beings are the more likely to be devoid of any sense of humor.
Scott McClellan is a worse traitor than Benedict Arnold.

I've known incredibly well-educated and intelligent people who never finished school and/or who had terrible grades. I think super brilliant people have more trouble in schools, which teach to a low common denominator, and which have worked hard to reach slower kids (to their credit) while seriously neglecting extra-bright kids (not to their credit), who are very different from "average" students.
I consider myself a person of moderate intelligence who is good at leveraging what I have for more. That has more to do with drive than intelligence.
And I've known people with lots of degrees who weren't nearly as smart as they thought there were.
So, no fair sterotyping "educated" people as lacking in common sense. "

Despotic ruler Mugabe is intimidating and murdering his own people, trying to fix the elections while making it look like a “democratic process” in order to dupe the West. Even Mugabe’s wife has been reported as saying that even if the opposition were to win, “they would never see the inside of the office”.
SO!---question—all you “nation builders” and proponents of that phony “we had to invade to remove that tyrant Saddam”—do we, America, now invade Zimbabwe? Even though there’s no oil to be had?
I’ll bet we don’t! Even if we wanted to, we don’t have the troops or ability to do it! One more example of how this dumb war has handicapped and hurt the US and its military! "

Reality is with responsible kids-like him now-all your teens ideas change when you HAVE your own! All that you thought was SO important seems trivial in your 20's.--they just don't see that from 16-18, which I didn't either!
As KING stated earlier, a lot of 2 daddy's around-same with mommies, But if these young adults with kids don't face up to their responsibilities and get on the same page with raising them, there will be chaos!
I am glad my son sees that fact, and when issues arise instead of being childish, Parent to Parent meetings take place.
The well being of the child is the first priority! "

Which I guess liberals as you state --HAVE NONE!
There are 2 sets of people:
1. common sense
2. book smart
rarely is there a combination of the two.
Book smart aids one in life by "thinking" they know it all because it was written.
Common sense people are more goal orientated. The majority are also the 1st born child. They do not need a book to get thru life, they "put words into actions".
Where as Book smarts only place actions into Big words. "

when I see other people's teens I am grateful. Mine don't drink or do drugs, drive cars too fast (or at all) or stay out late, run around getting girls pregnant or catching diseases, lie, cheat, or steal (unless you count dubious downloads -- endemic among teens). In fact, they don't even play loud music (much) -- and the both like the same music I listened to as a teen best (though the older one also listens to techno which can drive me buggy after a while -- too repetetive/frantic).
Things could be a whole lot worse.
There are some good rent prices out in the countryside, but there's a reason. You are miles from anything (closest gas station is about 7-8 miles; Supermarket is further) and there is almost no where you can live out here where you aren't exposed to the toxins in the fumes from the spreading of liquid manure -- it's not the "smell" that's dangerous, but that for which the smell is a marker. For any political commentator perceived to be any strain of "liberal," the first requirement for being accorded Seriousness status by the political and media establishment is "balance." To be deemed a sober and responsible thinker, one must Joe-Klein-ify oneself -- show what a good, thoughtful, decent liberal you are by eagerly spending at least as much of your time praising conservatives and bashing liberals as you do anything else. That's what a reasonable, thoughtful liberal does, by definition.
The converse applies just as rigidly. If you criticize the Right too stridently, condemn the Bush faction without qualification or restraint, or fail to posit an equivalence between Right and Left, then -- regardless of the accuracy or truth of your critique -- you are automatically deemed too partisan, shrill, and, worst of all, Unserious. ....

Middle class are heading to food pantries, but right now they are very low, also animal shelters are getting bombarded with left behind pets from foreclosures.
Today I bagged some things for the pantry. I seperated and bagged cookies/snacks for the homeless lunches.
Over the summer I am leading the girl scout troop making "catnip socks" and collecting food for those shelters. "

None the less-I did NOT say ALL were NOT deserving, many are in need and they should get it.
Since you researched YOU feel the SAME.
We differ on thoughts of the abusers-I say in Auburn there are more than you think.
I agree housing/rent has gone too far-where I live, you cant rent for under 650.00 for 1 bdr apt. A house with 3 bdrs would be 1500.00+ plus utilities.
Middle class cant even afford that!
In my area they are building state-funded housing but it wont be available for about 3 yrs. It will not be enough, especially after all these foreclosures.
My oldest decided to buy-he figured best to pay 1400.00 mortgage and have it to keep, then give it away to a landlord.
Son with 2 kids,750.00 for a 2bdr.plus utilities. He/she work fulltime make 3200 month, before health insurance and taxes comes out, they are struggling. But still want to buy a house, homesite should be helping them but they make too much!
I think the housing issue needs more attention than rising gas prices. "

Sometimes I think when karl talks of the POOR he means 3rd world countries, which is way different than USA POOR.
Here we have options and I dont want programs to go away--I just want them better utilized, monitored closer, truly given to those in need.
With all the cutbacks-these programs will suffer, BUT if we take out all the abusers I think MORE could benefit.
WE cant stop all the abusers because they will find a way to beat the system.
But If we started with drug testing in order to recieve=which is no different than applying for a job. That will weed some,
If we hire more workers to spot check homesite/medicade/welfare/foodstamps, that will weed out more. Which opens more funds for those that really need.
More employers are GPSing company vehicles and now company cell phones. Alot of state/city job losses will come from that, but if they arent doing their job as they are stating on paper then they need to be fired.
Another note: if you ever find a funny looking tiny object in something you have purchased--ITs a tracking device. Companies say its to follow the product, to see if truckers are keeping items at the right temperature, etc.
In truth they have a shortage problem and trying to find the cause. "

cm wrote on Jun 3, 2008 4:05 PM:
There is a difference between being poor and abusing the system.
We know both DO exist.
The bigger difference is poor people DONT want a hand out, they are strong-willed and full of pride.
the abusers have no pride, nor no will.
I was a cashier at Wegmans, I saw the difference everyday.
A story: an elderly lady came in every week-her shopping habits changed from the start of the month(SS check) to counting pennies for a quart of milk the end of the month. One day she was short 10 cents-I said I would cover her-NO WAY, she wouldn't have it. the end of next month I told her it was on sale(someone took the sign down) and I paid the difference.
Food stampers came in weekly too-some needy, they bought store brand, never name brands, lots of chicken, hotdogs, spaghetti in a can,and powered milk.
The abusers bought steak, shrimp, name brands, never low cost items. Unless it was the free WIC stuff.
there are big differences! "

As parents we need to teach our kids how to pay more attention to the happenings locally/in Washington, for it will affect them one day.

Well, Karl, I wouldn't paint this McClellan guy quite that heroically -- I'll bet he is just as packed with political peccadilloes as the next Washington termite, but he did have courage to do the right thing this time. It took him a while, and knowing there would be possible intense repercussions, I can understand that. I don't doubt his motives are mixed -- balancing the desirable income against the nasty repercussions, with a dash of ethics mixed in uncertain amounts, he did the right thing. Maybe for SOME right reasons, maybe not, but it's done.
But I wouldn't get all hero rhetoric-y about it. A real person, with some conflicts, some good and bad in him, chose the right thing this time. That's good, that's commendable, but he's not ready for sainthood. "
