SWEDEN, N.Y. - A flight instructor and student were critically injured Sunday when a two-seater airplane crashed in a field about 18 miles west of Rochester.
The plane crashed in the town of Sweden near the Ledgedale Flight Center shortly after noon, said Monroe County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. John Helfer.
Davy Merritt, a flight instructor and owner of Merritt Aire, was airlifted to a Rochester hospital, and an unnamed student in his mid-20s was taken by ambulance, said Merrit Aire pilot and instructor Paul Shelley.
The plane's nose was face down after the crash, and the tail was bent downward, creating an inverted V shape with the rest of the aircraft, a Cessna Model 172.
A firetruck responded to the scene, though neither flames nor smoke were evident.
According to Shelley, Merritt has owned Ledgedale Flight Center for almost two years and has logged more than 17,000 hours of flight time.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
