Taxpayers are angry, not confused, on turf issue

Monday, June 2, 2008 11:53 AM EDT

I'm not confused, I'm angry because elected official aren't listening. The artificial turf proposal was defeated by the people that were asked to pay for it. Plain and simple no! Maybe it has something to do with forcing the same proposal down our throats no matter what our wishes are. Most of us taxpayers knew the two budgets were two separate votes, the fact that there is two separate votes is an issue in itself. What are they afraid of, that both budgets can't be voted on the same day. Well, what they were afraid of did happen anyway -- another no! The closer they are together the better chance of defeat.
I don't know anybody that doesn't want the best education we can afford for our children. You (school board) just don't get it. What we want, and what we need are entirely two different things. In case you haven't noticed, gas is climbing 10 cents a week, food prices are also soaring, everything is sailing out of site, including taxes. When you are having trouble putting food on the table and medication in your medicine chest, paying rent or mortgage. Do you buy wall to wall carpet for your entire house? I don't think so. I'm not anti-sports or anti-band, as a matter of fact I spend my Friday nights in the fall, at Holland Stadium watching Auburn football. The fact that the school board failed to listen to the voters may very well put sports and band in jeopardy. The backlash is coming with the next vote.

If the next budget is defeated what happens then? What is the first thing you're going to cut as a school board - sports and band! Without sports and band what do you need artificial turf for? That was my original objection to the turf from the start. Putting so much money in an area that is so vulnerable to budget cutbacks. You can buy a lot of books for the price of the turf, how many teachers, or truant officers, can you hire with the same money?

Auburn band and Auburn sports are the cream of the crop in competition. And they have done it well for years, without the turf! So replace the leaky roof and the cracked sidewalks, fix the heat and the windows. Those things are needed. Most of all, educate our children with the money.

" Don't vote no on the capital project grant. That money is ours by right. We paid for it with our various state taxes and fees. If we don't take it a smarter school district will. The vast majority of that grant is for energy efficiency and maintenance issues. One of the few things we can control in our school's budget is energy and maintenance cost. Don't hamstring us with voting no. "

" The comments on the truf issue are getting old, it was voted done once, and that should be it NO TRUF. The school board and Pabis are playing the game of wear them down, or trying to any ways. Truf doesn't make a football player better,it doesn't make a drummer better and it won't bring people to Auburn. For you wantabe parents who think your kid is going to make the pros because they play on truf, forget it, truf doesn't make it happen. Yes if Holland needs to be repaired, then do it in moderation, there are more inportant issues with the Auburn School system than sports and turf, its been voted down, let it die. Education of the children should be the top piority. "

" If you want turf then raise ALL the money with private funds. And when it needs replacement raise ALL the money privately again. The school can pay for maintaining the field as it would be cheaper than a grass field. And if the state caps property tax, the school budgets will get tighter than ever and all non educational items should get user fees. Clubs, band and sports. "

" The sediment conveyed by Mr Fedyshyn is indicative of most in this community. I often wondered how the Mayor, and the City Council, and the City Manager, can present a budget and hold the line on taxes, and yet provide the services we need, while JD Pabis and his minions of administrators, and his Board of Education, call for tax increases year after year. Both have to meet insurance costs, both have to meet fuel costs, both have to provide services, and both have to rely on state aid, and both have to meet mandates, the city is trounced with mandates on a daily basis, yet they are sensitive to the pulse of the community. The arrogance of Mr Pabis and his board is sickening. They would rather lie about deadlines in the hopes of getting proposals passed out of fear. They would rather cut sports and band rather than take the budget back and rework it for the betterment of the community. So much for "Its for the children" They would rather force a contingency budget then actually do a little work which would accomplish what the city has done. Well we don't need that type of representation. That's not leadership, they would rather dictate and strong arm.
Then answer is simple, Mr Pabis take the budget back, make the Board of Education and you Administrators do a little work and par it back. Demonstrate some leadership, show some compassion, par that budget down. Do it for the community, do it for the kids

This is the very first time a school budget was defeated since we got the right to vote on school budgets. Listen to us, don't try to analyze us. Get to work! "

" If someone really wants turf, propose the idea while tying it in to perks for the taxpayers. I really would like my driveway sealed, and the roof re-shingled (Yea, its a 60 year roof that is 5 years old, but a new roof would be cool) Kind of like when Hillary voted to fund the war in Iraq. She voted any funding plan down until Bush included $$$$$ for her pork projects. Then she voted for funding. So, I propose that everyone in Auburn gets their driveway sealed with taxpayer money, and anyone who's roof is more than 5 years old gets it replaced, if they'll just vote in favor of turf at the next vote. Is it a deal? "

" Pinhead, have those "private donors" signed a legally binding contract to pay for the upkeep, maintenance, and eventual replacement of the turf when it needs it---which, if it gets half the use that people are postulating, would be considerable?
If they are, and if it casts the taxpayers NOT ONE CENT for say, oh, 100 years, then I'm all for it!
As the Arabs like to say: "When you give your a wedding gift, give him a sick camel"
Turf is a "sick camel"! "

" Cutting funds for field trips? What district might that be? I have kids that go to the poorest district in the Boces network, and they're not seeing cuts to field trips. Maybe that's an issue you should take up with your district's Super rather than raining on the parade of others. And believe me, those others are a lot more than a "select few". "

vinmeister1 wrote on Jun 2, 2008 3:39 PM:

" Wow! Here we go again. My childrens field trips are being cut down next year due to lack of funds but yet lets put in turf for a few select kids and parents that want it. If any comment is "nonsensical" it would be to put turf in rather than let a thousand other school children have the chance to expierience culture, art, music etc. Not to mention the overall growth in their lives. Turf will not do that. "

yetanotherpinhead wrote on Jun 2, 2008 2:07 PM:

" Yet another comment lacking in coherence and lucidity. The only time "turf" was voted down was when it was to go behind the HS as a practice field. This is an entirely new proposal at an entirely different location; and most would agree it's where the first turf proposal should have been to begin with.

Now as I'm sure everyone also knows, the turf aspect of the improvement project is being paid for privately. But of course most of you dotards will still find some issue to take with that, and continue to wave your fists in the air defiantly. Whatever. Yawn.

Holland Stadium is in dire need of the improvements and restoration contained within the proposal. The cost to the taxpayer for these improvements is negligble, even for the most conservative of tightwads.

Also, the school budget itself was entirely fair and reasonable. It actually contained less of a spending increase than many districts in the area, as well as NYS. The district is subject to the same cost increases as we all are.. fuel, food, insurance, etc. The spending increase was decidedly modest, considering.

Now back to your regularly scheduled nonsensical blather. "

" The school board is playing a game with the voters.
They are hoping that with the price of gas the NO voters WONT turn out. This will aid them to pass their budget.

Holding a second vote for turf-is another plot in the game. How many times will you drive to vote?????

Everyone will soon tire of the game and not shoe--except the boards "groupies" that will vote YES..

The price of gas/food should NOT stop you from voting NO!!! "
