POPLAR RIDGE -- After several meetings and banking numerous hours, the Southern Cayuga Central School District Board of Education has put forth a new 2008-09 proposed school budget.
The board on Monday unanimously adopted a proposed operating budget of $16,373,330, an increase of 2.9 percent over last year, which carries an estimated 6.8 percent increase to the tax levy.
Taxpayers will vote on this budget June 17.
Board members carefully deliberated over line items and devised various scenarios that could cut costs during a board meeting lasting nearly three hours under the watchful eyes of more than 100 community members who gathered in the high school cafeteria.
Board President Ted Rejman conducted straw polls on the various items that could be cut from the original operating budget of $16,448,192 defeated by voters 413-378 May 20. That budget carried a tax levy increase of 5.24.
