One step away

Oliver Moore picked a fine time to find the net. Moore scored three goals, all in the fourth quarter, as the fourth-seeded Skaneateles boys lacrosse team upset No. 1 LaFayette 9-8 in the Section III, Class C semifinals at Coyne Field in Syracuse, Saturday.
Moore scored the winning goal with 1:40 left to play as Matt Wood assisted. Richards also finished with a hat trick for the Lakers.

“We are a very balanced team,” Lakers coach Ron Doctor said. “We don't have just one player you can focus on in the game.”

The Lakers (15-5) now play third-seeded Christian Brothers Academy at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Coyne Field.

Keith Buehler finished with one goal while Richards also had an assist in the game.

“It seems that they've been the main scorers this past year,” Doctor said of Buehler and Richards. “The rest are all compliments to them and that is important.”

Patrick Emmer led the Lakers with two assists and also scored a goal whole Thomas Schoener found the net once. Josh Kimm had nine key saves for Skaneateles.

The Lancers scored six goals in the second half, but still weren't able to slow down the Lakers or Moore in the fourth.

“We get everyone involved in the game,” Doctor said. “It just depends on the situation and the flow at the time of the game. That was the case with Moore in the fourth today. We have different levels of abilities and are quite a balanced team.”

The Lakers have met up with Christian Brothers Academy earlier this season in a 12-11 loss.

Doctor is worried about the Brothers' experience, especially in the sectional finals. He said the Lakers will review film before the game and start the preparation process immediately.

“I need to get information on their defense,” Doctor said. “I need to know who they will cover and then get familiar with their formations.”

Skaneateles will look to Matt Wood for another big game on the faceoffs, as he did Saturday. Wood won 11 of the 20 faceoffs.

“He kept their top midfielder to just two assists today,” Doctor said. “He came through on defense for us too.”
