WEEDSPORT- Redemption can bring a sweet taste to one's mouth.
Union Springs won its second straight Cayuga County Golf Tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course with team score of 197 on Friday. Wolves senior Matt Cuff was the medalist of the tournament with a 36.

The victory was even sweeter for Cuff, who lost the medalist award last year on a playoff hole against Moravia's Ben Shields.

“It felt so nice to come out on top this year,” Wolves Cuff said. “Last year losing to Shields in a playoff hole was a bummer for me.”

Wolves' seventh grader Austin Thomas finished his day with a 39, good enough for third place overall. Mike Bean came in with a 40 while Eric Hlywa and B.J. O'Hara both finished with a 41. Tim Morabito out the scoring with a 42 as all Union Springs golfers finished in the top 10.

“This was a nice way to round our season out,” Wolves coach Todd Salls said. “This will leave big expectations for next year. We will move on well. We had some very good scores turned in today. It was nice to see Matt win and also Wednesday at the IACs - (it was a) good way to send him out as the only senior on the Wolves.”

Cuff came out to Meadowbrook Thursday to practice and get a feel for the course.

“That was my first time since eighth grade that I had played here,” Cuff said. “It was key for me to come out here Thursday so I could get a feel of the course. I was also able to strategize the layout of the course.”

That turned out to be key as Cuff rebounded after double bogeying the second hole. He went on to birdie hole three and six.

“”It got me back on track,“ Cuff said of the birdie spurt.

Southern Cayuga's Lewis Morse finished second overall with a 37 and helped the Chiefs take second place with a 217. Dan Le and Ryan Killian finished with a 44 each. Arthur Burt and Jordan Dean rounded their days out with a 46 while Kyle Hurd-Perez carded a 50.

“We played well today,” Chiefs coach Harold Soloman said. “I was very pleased with the performance we had today compared to a very good Union Springs team. I also take into fact that we have never played this course prior to today and we come in second place.”

The Chiefs end the season over .500, but Morse felt he could have played better at times.

“I had a few down matches this year,” Morse said. “Hopefully things turn around for me next year.”

Cuff feels the streak of seniors taking medalist at the tournament could extend next season with Morse taking the honor.

“It's been a pattern of that,” Cuff said. “Maybe he will keep it going.”

The host of this year's tournament, Weedsport took, third place with a final of 222. Chris Johnson, Jason Ryan and Matt Short all came in with a 43 on the day. Drew Lane shot a 44 while Cody Fabian had a 49 and Shawn Grader carded a 55.

“I was very pleased with our scores today,” Warriors coach Jamie Carr said. “It was our best team totals on the year, if I'm not mistaken. I can offer no complaints to today's scores. The boys played well and brought the scores in we needed.”

Carr did admit he had some nerves prior to the tournament.

“As time went on though I got more and more excited,” Carr said. “I'm very fortunate with how everything went off without any hitches. Next year, Moravia gets to host the tournament.”

Zack Abulencia led Port Byron with a 41 and also finished sixth overall. The Panthers took fourth as a team (225). Dan Wilkinson shot a 42, earning him ninth place overall. Adam Leary carded a 45 and Dan O'Hara rounded out his day with a 48. J.T. DeBois came in with a 49.

Todd Wilcox led Cato-Meridian with a 44 helping them earn a 251 team total for fifth place. Marc Walton finished with a 48. Paul Barbagallo and Chris Sperling carded a 49 each for Cato-Meridian.

Moravia was only able to send three golfers to the tournament and Anthony Canestaro led the Blue Devils with a 46.
