One might think that as the school year begins winding its way toward summer vacation, it would mean a winding down of activities as well. But anyone with children in the Weedsport district knows that is not the case. With a little under a month until graduation, we have to squeeze in as many banquets, concerts, sectionals and meetings as possible and frankly, it's exhausting.
On Memorial Day, our government students participated in Weedsport's annual parade and ceremony at the American Legion, and our marching band participated in both the Weedsport and Auburn parades. Later that evening, a watch fire was held at the high school to properly dispose of worn American flags and to further show our community's appreciation for those who have served.
It's always a wonderful thing to see our village come together for these special events, as well as a great way to teach our children the meaning of these traditions.
The class of 2008 made an early morning of it (in dresses and ties, no less) on May 27 at the 15th annual senior breakfast, where they also enjoyed several presentations, received their yearbooks and had their class portrait done in all their full cap and gown glory. Let the countdown begin!
On the evening of May 27, the high school academic awards ceremony was held, followed by the middle school academic awards on the morning of May 28, with many of our students recognized for their hard work in the classroom, band and chorus.
It's amazing to see how many of our seniors and eighth graders have achieved high honor status for their entire high school and middle school careers.
Weedsport is a big sports town, and we honored our varsity athletes on May 28 at the annual athletic banquet. Congratulations are in order for Casey Sears and Luke Baker, recipients of the sportsmanship awards; Chelsea Paquette and Oliver Jordan, recipients of the Warrior Booster Club scholarship awards; and Allison Beardsley and Bryce Leitten, recipients of the outstanding senior athlete awards. We also bid a fond farewell to coaches Kathy Greenwood (cheerleading) and Mike Guzewicz (diving) upon their retirements, and inducted Tom McGraw from the Class of 1968 into the Weedsport Sports Hall of Fame (accompanied by a very entertaining speech).
Many of our teams have enjoyed league and sectional success, with track and field sectionals still to take place this weekend.
We can be proud of all our athletes and the way they conduct themselves on and off the field/diamond/court/pool/track/trail/course.
Many thanks to all of the coaches, parents and booster club members for their time and support.
In other school news, our high school Odyssey of the Mind team heads to worlds at the University of Maryland from May 31 to June 4; they've worked extremely hard to prepare and raise money to attend, and we wish them well.
The final APT meeting of the year will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 in the high school board room to tie up loose ends and begin discussing plans for the 2008 to 2009 school year.
The annual middle school Art & Music Festival will be held on June 10, with a concert at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
The high school festival is the following night on June 11, with the annual Prism concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The Prism concert is always an enjoyable event with the high school band and chorus, as well as other special numbers prepared by the students. Both nights are open to the public and free of charge.
Don't forget the upcoming Weedsport Firemen's Field Days from June 5 to June 7. The “kiddie” parade is Thursday night (beginning at the elementary school) and the firemen's parade is at 7 p.m. Friday night (beginning at the high school).
Be sure to get out and enjoy the parades, stop in for some delicious food and fun rides, and tell our volunteer fire department how much they're appreciated!
A final note to Andrew F. Bates: Happy 20th anniversary on June 11 to my high school sweetheart, my friend and father of our beautiful children. I love our life and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next. “I-you-ee!”
