Bug Run 2008, the first 85-mile, bug-catching motorbike ride through scenic Seneca and Cayuga counties, will take place next Saturday. Paper targets will be attached to the front of motorcycles to collect bug splats along the way and are judged according to a variety of criteria. Cars are welcome, but the same fees apply.
“We're thinking at least 100 riders and passengers will come,” said Jan Rhodes, resource development coordinator for the Seneca Cayuga ARC. A registration fee of $20 per driver and $15 per passenger covers the barbecue, door prizes and a commemorative pin.
The benefit run begins at Vince's Park, at the intersection of Routes 318 and 5 & 20 in Seneca Falls, to support Seneca Cayuga ARC. Proceeds go to under-funded and non-funded agency programs and services.
Riders will be treated to coffee and baked goods in the morning, including bug-shaped muffins.
Curt Schreiner is the ARC transport manager and organizer who suggested the “target” Bug Run idea. He had heard about bug runs in New England and thought the idea would appeal to riders here.
“It's a new idea here,” Rhodes said. “We printed our own targets on card stock and have special tape to attach them to the bikes so that they will release and not take the paint off.” Different motorcycles will require different methods of displaying the targets, with some being mounted to backerboard.
Pam Bock, the ARC's agency investigator for quality, is a co-organizer.
Trophies for the largest bug splat, the most splats, the most artistic, closest to the bull's eye, and most colorful will be awarded. The club with the most participants will also receive a trophy.
The three-to-four-hour bike tour begins at noon and returns to Vince's Park for a chicken barbecue.
A 50/50 raffle as well as other raffles and door prizes will be offered, such as a recliner from Lynch's Furniture in Auburn, a $50 certificate for a cruise on the MV Manhattan from Cayuga Lake Cruises, a membership to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, an Esperanza Rose cruise on Keuka Lake, a photo package from Telllier's Studios in Waterloo, a $50 certificate for tattoos or piercings from Underground Ink, a beautiful handmade leather purse from House of Leather and a big prize of an overnight stay at an undisclosed local resort.
The run will make two stops: One at Camp Columbus, the agency's Owasco Lake summer camp in Owasco, and MacKenzie-Childs in Aurora, which are designated checkpoints to provide breaks, refreshments and a Bug Run validation stamp.
Sponsors of the event include NUCOR Steel, the King of the Road sponsor, Daggett Insurance and Moran, Moran & Dauphin, Inc.
