Unlike in 2006, it appears that state Assemblyman Brian Kolb, R-Canandaigua, will have an opponent in November.
The Cayuga County Democratic Committee recently endorsed Noah Sargent, of Clifton Springs, to challenge Kolb in the 129th District. Sargent is a radiology technologist at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
“Noah Sargent is off to a very energetic start,” county Democratic committee chair Katie Lacey said. “It's a big district.”
“We have three Assembly Districts in this county,” Lacey said, “but we have absolutely zero clout because they're all Republicans. They're sitting there in a hopeless minority and can't get out of each other's way. They could save the taxpayers a lot of money by staying home.”
While Lacey noted the overwhelmingly Democratic Assembly and a Democratic governor, she said the Senate is up for grabs within a seat or two.
“There's going to be a real battle over control of the state Senate,” she said, noting that state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, will be challenged by Paloma Capanna, a trial lawyer from Pittsford. County Democrats also endorsed Capanna as their candidate for District 54.
The committee also endorsed incumbent Auburn City Court Judge Michael McKeon, first-term U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri for the 24th Congressional District and Dan Maffei for the 25th Congressional District, a race he lost two years ago. Arcuri was scheduled to officially make a re-election announcement today at Auburn's city hall.
County Democrats also endorsed Barbara Abbott King, of Aurora, for Assembly in District 123, a race she lost in 2006 to incumbent Gary Finch. Finally, local Democrats endorsed incumbent Democrat David Valesky for re-election to the state Senate in District 49.
At least one opponent for Valesky appears to be lined up as the Cayuga County Conservative Party, which met on Thursday night, endorsed James DiStefano for that seat.
The Conservatives also gave their backing to the following candidates: Auburn City Court judge, McKeon; state Assembly incumbents, Gary Finch (District 123); Robert Oaks (District 128); Kolb (District 129); Dale Sweetland to replace James Walsh in the 25th Congressional District; Richard Hanna in the 24th Congressional District; and County Legislature District 15, Patrick MacIntosh (who was appointed this year to replace Steve Netti).
Cayuga County Republican Party Chair Cherl Heary said her committee will meet Monday, June 2.
