The Union Springs boys golf team placed second overall against 16 teams in the IAC League Championships Wednesday with a team score of 434 at Soaring Eagles in Horseheads.
Wolves senior Matt Cuff was the medalist of the tournament going one stroke ahead of second place shooting a 77. Cuff was also the lowest senior which gives him added recognition and he was awarded the MVP of the IAC Division III and received an award for having the second highest grade point average of the entire IAC league.
“It was a great way to finish the season for Matt,” Todd Salls, Union Springs head coach, said. “He hadn't been doing well at tournaments this season and he really had a great game leading the team to second place.”
Last season the Wolves ended up fourth overall with Cuff placing 10th, placing first is the best he has done in his career.
Also placing for Union Springs was Eric Hlywa who carded an 83 putting him in 12th place overall, Michael Bean came in 18th recording an 86, Tim Morabito shot an 89, Austin Thomas scored a 99 and B.J. O'Hara finished with a 100.
Friday the Wolves will try to defend their title in the Cayuga County Tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course, in Weedsport, along with Port Byron, Weedsport, Moravia, Cato-Meridian and Southern Cayuga. Union Springs placed first last year in the tournament and are hoping for success again.
“It will be a well contested tournament,” Salls said. “We won last year so the boys are looking forward to it. They will get to see a lot of players they know, since it's all local teams, so it's a fun tournament for them to play. It is a nice way to end the season.”
