More than 50 environmentally-minded individuals from Owasco turned out Saturday morning, May 3.
Many had areas in mind that they wanted to clean and were anxious to get started. For those that did not have any preference, the committee targeted several trouble spots. Bags and gloves were also given to tackle the dirty job.
Many thanks to bagpiper Brian Clancy for giving the group a super sendoff.
A huge contingent worked diligently on Town Hall Road as well as many other areas in our town. On Town Hall Road, volunteers were seen straddling the ditches and in many cases knee deep in the water. With a violent battle of the bugs (May black flies) much of the debris was collected and bagged.
The amount of hard work by these dedicated volunteers was visible by the 70 filled bags left by the side of the roads for our road crew.
Many thanks to Earlene Sorensen and Linda Tersegno for bringing this project to the attention of Town Councilman Gino Alberici. Thank you to all the volunteers and special thanks to Anna Comitz who brought along many of the teens from the Sacred Heart Youth group. Their help was invaluable. Gary Duckett, chairman of the Cayuga County Parks and Trails Commission, and Jessica Miles, Owasco Lake Watershed steward, also deserve special thanks for coming and pitching in.
We hope that this is an annual Earth Day event and welcome all to participate next year.
We can be proud of Owasco and its volunteers.
