Girls are invited to bring the whole family for an evening of touring Girl Scout camp, complete with activities, a tour of the facilities and a visit to the trading post. Meet some of the summer camp staff and find out what you need to know to make sure girls have a fun, educational summer.
The fun will happen from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Girl Scouts' Yaiewano Program Center, on Owasco Lake south of Auburn. Girls, both members and non-members, can join the resident camp adventure this summer at Yaiewano, where sessions run from June 29 to Aug. 1. Non-members are welcome.
Sessions are geared to appropriate age levels for girls heading into second through 12th grades in the fall, and include four-day introduction programs. Overnight sessions include fun like the Invention Convention where girls will invent and try a new toy of their own; Summer Stock where they can write, create and produce a skit; and Club Owasco, a time to relax in a resort-like week of fun. There are more sessions to choose from, including four-day and two-week programs.
Adults honored
The Girl Scouts-Seven Lakes Council honored 20 adults at its recent annual meeting, several from Cayuga County. Mary Hopkins and Cynthia Westmiller of Auburn, and Mary Kate Brentlinger, Maureen Ogden, Anne Weller and Hilary Zimmer-Brown of Weedsport all received the Girl Scout Appreciation Pin. The Appreciation Pin honors outstanding service to Girl Scouting in one or more geographic areas.
The Cato/Meridian area also received the Girl Scout President's Award for meeting a prescribed set of criteria including adult training and membership retention. Rose Weller is the volunteer manager for that community. On Saturday, May 31, Girl Scouts in Cato are having a car wash, bake sale and bottle drive at the Cato Phone Co. They were also represented in the Cato Memorial Day parade Monday, and will have a year-end ceremony June 8 at Conquest Park.
At the Seven Lakes' annual meeting, Deborah Schwarting of Weedsport was elected as a delegate to the Girl Scout National Council Session scheduled for October in Indianapolis. Kathy Smith of Montezuma received a 40-year membership pin.
Smith is the receptionist at the Girl Scout council's main office in Phelps. Cary Merritt of Weedsport received the 25-year pin.
Other Local
Happenings:
Girl Scouts in the south end of the county are planning a bus trip to New York City to see “Grease” and participate in a Broadway workshop for the show. They are also planning a camping weekend in August. This is the time of year many Girl Scouts “bridge” up to the next program age level, so many activities to commemorate the transitions are planned.
There is still room in those summer camp sessions. For details on summer fun or the family fun nights, call the council at 539-5085 or visit www.girlscoutssevenlakes.org.
