Kaitlyn Aldrich led the sixth-seeded Auburn girls lacrosse team to a 14-12 upset victory over No. 3 Cicero-North Syracuse in the first round of the Section III, Class A playoffs Tuesday. The junior led the Maroons with five goals and sophomore Christine Desocio finished with four goals. Flannery Nangle added two goals.
Nicole Schattinger, Chelsea Smith and Brittany Rabuano all had one goal while Nangle led the team with two assists.
“They played a great game tonight,” Maroons coach Amy Spin said. “Christine stepped up big when we needed it the most.”
Auburn was down 7-4 at halftime, but fought back. The Maroons chipped away and eventually tied the game, 12-12, with 57 second remaining. Then Nangle set up Desocio for a goal which turned out to be the winner.
“I know my team comes alive in the second half,” Spin said. “I just told them to be patient and let it come to them. They listened and were patient with their shots. It was a close game all the way until the end.”
Nangle added an insurance goal to cement the win.
Auburn will play Fayetteville-Manlius in Marcellus Thursday.
