It's a twist on summer camp for teens interested in health care. M.A.S.H. Camp (Medical Academy of Science and Health) is for junior high students who want to spend two days in the real world of health care. On July 8 and 9, Auburn Memorial Hospital (AMH) will host its fourth annual M.A.S.H. Camp.
AMH is co-sponsoring M.A.S.H. Camp with the Central New York Area Health Education Center (CNYAHEC) and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

“We see this as a unique opportunity for our local young people to spend time working with dedicated health professionals who are excited to share their knowledge and experience with teens,” stated Judy Santillo, program coordinator for AMH.

Leslie Kannus, program manager for CNYAHEC, notes that M.A.S.H. Camp helps young people to consider careers in health care they might not otherwise be aware of. “This year we will be co-sponsoring 15 M.A.S.H. camps across our 14-county Central New York region.

We appreciate the support of local hospitals and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield in reaching an important target group with an innovative, hands-on program.”

M.A.S.H. Camp is open to students entering eighth or ninth grade this September. Enrollment is limited to 20 students.

Application packets are available by calling 255-7350 or going to CNYAHEC's Web site at www.cnyahec.org.

Applicants must write an essay stating why they want to attend M.A.S.H. Camp and submit it with the application form and registration fee of $20. The application deadline is Friday, June 6, and students selected to participate will be notified within a few weeks of the deadline.

Regionally:

Two additional programs will also be held this summer regionaly. These are offered by Finger Lakes Health in partnership with the Western New York Rural Area Health Education Center (R-AHEC).

The first program, MASH (Medical Academy of Science and Health) Camp, will be offered July 21 through 25 at Geneva General Hospital, Geneva. It is open to students entering seventh and eighth grades.

The second program, Camp MEDQUEST, will be offered July 30 and 31 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Penn Yan.

It is open to students entering ninth through 12th grades in the fall.

The programs are designed to allow campers to experience the possibilities of health care careers right where health care services are delivered - in the hospital - guided by health-care professionals including nurses, therapists, technicians and others.

MASH Camp participants will circulate through various hospital departments in a group, while the Camp MEDQUEST participants will select high interest areas in which they will spend individual time with health-care providers. The fee for MASH Camp is $65; the Camp MEDQUEST fee is $25.

For an application for MASH Camp, contact Jean Harman at 787-4065. Camp MEDQUEST information and applications can be obtained from Loree MacKerchar at 531-2053.
