As spring arrives in our quite little village things really start to come to life.
Our quaint little village is undergoing some really big changes. All the construction projects that have been sitting idle most of the winter months are now moving forward full steam ahead.
The sewer project has been moving along, not as fast as some think it should, but they have begun laying the pipe's over to the plant and have been busy hooking up pumping stations. Sure is a messy project, but so is the new road they are putting in. Makes traveling through the village a little different.
If you are not familiar with the side streets it can become frustrating I'm sure. A lot of folks complain about the streets being torn up but they need to realize it is all part of the project, and I'm told it won't need to be replaced for another 75 years, but by then I am sure I won't be here.
The plans are to have a light paving in time for the Memorial Day parade today, so that will sure help.
Most of the seasonal shops are now open for business and a few new ones have appeared. If you happen to come to town you should check them all out. They all have a lot to offer. One of the new places to open this year is the old Smith's Hardware, now known as the “Hardware Cafe & General Store.” About two years ago, the Hardware was listed for sale and was shown to a couple folks, but the store was in need of a lot of repair work. After not having any luck selling, the realtor, Tina Hanford and husband Tim along with their best friends and next door neighbors Carrie and Steve Bolton, decided to look at the property for themselves. Both couples grew up in the area and did not want to see the store just sit and fall in, so after lengthy conversations the four decided to buy the place.
For the past two years the youngsters have been really working hard renovating the place. The upstairs, “The Crows Nest,” has been all redone and has a completely furnished three-bedroom lodge, which will sleep eight. They hope to be able to rent this out to fishermen and summer tourists. Also on the second floor, Tina will have a Branch of Sun Harvest Realty.
On the first floor you will find a newly renovated cafe serving breakfast and lunch. They have gourmet coffees, teas, lattes, shakes, hot chocolate, smoothies and so much more. They also are serving award winning Gifford's Ice cream and sweet treats. On the first floor you will also find old fashion candies, chocolates, specialty gifts, quilts and local artist's works.
They are planning a grand opening sometime in the near future. They would like to have different types of events, such as music, readings, etc. The four would like the Hardware to be a special part of the community, where folks can come and visit and enjoy each others company.
They told me they were lucky enough to get some of the memorabilia from the Ronnie Smith family. Ronnie was owner for as many years as I can remember until a few years ago when his health forced him to sell. And no matter what or who owns it, it will always be Smith's Hardware to me.
These youngsters have worked very hard renovating this building yet most of the wood work floors, etc. still are the originals. They have done a great job.
Also newly renovated is Giuseppe's sub shop. They have done a great job too and offer sub sandwiches, pizza and much more.
The Pleasant Beach Hotel is open for its second season and has just finished putting down new hardwood flooring. The business has a great staff and are ready to make you feel at home while there.
The Fair Haven State Park has already been full up a couple times. They are expecting to be a lot busier this year. With gas so high, folks are staying closer to home. The park generates a lot of business to our small town.
