Local musical talent will be highlighting a 12-hour Memorial Day weekend Outdoor Music Fest hosted by the Auburn Public Theater in the newly renovated Exchange Street Mall.
Concert-goers can come and go as they please while they feast on grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and sip soda as they listen to more than 10 bands perform inside and outside the theater.
Peter Cramer, a technical director and producer for the theater, said the event promises to be a fun and relaxing holiday event.
“For the first half of the concert the music will be outside,” Cramer said. “It will be a comfortable, easygoing atmosphere if the weather is nice. People can just kick back and relax.”
Carey Eidel, managing director at the theater, said the concert would be Cramer's first event as a producer.
“Because of his job as the technical director he is always interacting with the bands when they perform here,” Eidel said. “Pete is always on stage and he has gotten to know the music community very well.”
It was Cramer's friendship with the bands who have always been supportive of the theater that pushed him to implement his concert idea.
“This concert is mostly to present the music and the musicians,” Cramer said. “All of these people are supporters of the theater, and I want to highlight them and their accomplishments as we welcome in the summer. They have been volunteering their time and we would like to help them and thank them for it. They support us, so we want to support them back.”
As the sun sets on the outdoor concert, listeners will be able to move inside where the concert will resemble the theater's weekly Tuesday night jam sessions.
Cramer said the Tuesday night event often draws in a good crowd and he expects attendance for the festival to be higher because the concert would feature only the best local artists.
But Angela Daddabbo, the theater's artistic director, expected attendance to ebb and flow as the concert comes and goes throughout the day.
“It's an all-day event and we hope to entertain people whether they are just passing by or sitting down to listen,” Daddabbo said.
Cramer added that the all-day event was meant to encourage people to come for the music they like before heading back to the streets to finish work or shopping, but that people should be aware that the indoor performances would have an entrance fee.
“It's a 12-hour concert, and I don't expect people to come for the whole thing,” Cramer said. “The first half will be free but people will have to pay a small cover charge when we go inside for the night. It will be worth it though, because the music will be more energized and up-tempo inside.”
