It looks as if the city of Auburn will not have to find a new home for its municipal court.
City and Cayuga County officials confirmed Friday that the two government entities have agreed on the terms for a renewed lease in the Historic Post Office. County legislators will have a chance to approve the agreement at next week's legislative meeting, as the topic has been added to the agenda.
According to Auburn City Manager Mark Palesh, the city will rent the first-floor space in the Genesee Street building for $13 per square foot a year. The five-year lease also includes annual increases, with the city paying $14 the fifth year, Palesh said.
City and county officials did not previously see eye-to-eye about the lease when the county Legislature's Public Works Committee had proposed a rate of $14. The city currently pays $11.80.
However, Palesh said Auburn Mayor Michael Quill and Legislative Chairman Roger Mills were able to work out a deal with which everyone can be happy.
“I think it is a good compromise, and I appreciate the county and city leadership making this happen,” Palesh said.
County Manager Wayne Allen said the measure could be pulled from the Tuesday meeting's agenda so Auburn City Council can approve the lease first. However, it seems a deal has been made, he said.
“It appears at this point there is a resolution,” Allen said. “I was told the city is on board, and I expect that the county is on board.”
