There are no engines to start. But racing won't be any less competitive.
For the eighth straight year, East Genesee Street will be transformed into Talladega Superspeedway as the Nucor Bar Mill Central New York All-American Soap Box Derby kicks off Saturday morning.
The derby has evolved every year, and the fan enthusiasm hasn't dwindled one bit. Each year, supporters line the street in front of Hoopes Park to root on the racers.
“The best part of the race is when the fans come out,” race director Steve Komanecky said. “It adds to the excitement. It's good for the whole community.”
Forty-four children will be split into three divisions - Stock, Super Stock and Super Kids. Pre-race practice will begin at 8 a.m. with opening ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m.
The official race is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
