Berwind tosses gem for Eagles

Freshman Nick Berwind pitched a two-hitter for the Jordan-Elbridge baseball team, earning the 3-2 win against Cazenovia Wednesday.
Jeff Donofrio went 1-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI in the fourth inning bringing in Zach Frost, putting the Eagles up 3-2.

Also at the plate for Jordan-Elbridge, Teddy Hart was 1-for-3 with a run, Eli Grauman went 1-for-2, Steve Loerzel was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Christian Berwind went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Ben Snyder was 0-for-2 with one RBI.

The Eagles (3-16) play their last game of the season against Christian Brothers Academy today.

Tully 7, Port Byron 1

Tab Carmon recorded the loss with three innings on the mound for the Panthers, allowing six hits and six runs.

Port Byron posted six hits with Kent Pitcher hitting an RBI single in the fifth, Dan Jefferds belted a double and Jake Bennett, Cody Forgham, Zach Kudla and Matt Warran each roped a single.

The Panthers (9-10) play Onondaga Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Christian Brothers Academy 8, Skaneateles 0

Alex Hughes threw seven strikeouts, three walks and allowed only seven hits in the loss for the Lakers.

At the plate, Skaneateles came up with five hits with one each from Hughes, Terry Blessing, Caryn Crary, Kate Driscoll and Rachael Wise.

Tonight the Lakers will play under the lights as they host Onondaga on senior night at 7 p.m.

Newark Valley 4, Southern Cayuga 0

Julie Hewitt pitched a strong four-hitter, with three strikeouts and a double at the plate in a game where the six errors cost them the win in the IAC playoff game.

Kim Willis contributed a single for the Chiefs.

“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong,” Southern Cayuga head coach Dave Hewitt said. “We just made too many mistakes and you can't do that against a good team.”

The Chiefs (17-2) are waiting now to see where they will fit into the sectional seedings.

Tully 9, Port Byron 1

In the last game before sectionals, Courtney Christina and Kara Pitcher both went 1-for-4 at the plate for the Panthers (5-13) while Shelby Gilbert and Sherri Dewitt both were 1-for-3.

Corey Ryan also 1-for-3 added a run to the board and Allyssa Lalande went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Cazenovia 12, Jordan-Elbridge 0

Cazenovia posted 14 hits off of the Eagles who only came up with one, belted by Elizabeth Caspari.

It was not only the lack of hits that hurt Jordan-Elbridge but it was the mistakes as well, with five errors.

In the pitching circle, Jenn Gasparek threw the complete game allowing 12 runs, with six of them earned, 14 hits and striking out four Lakers batters.
