ALBANY -- A preliminary tally shows about 92 percent of local school budgets have been approved by voters.
The state Education Department's early results show voters in 472 school districts approved their budgets while 36 were rejected. The results from about 200 districts -- including all of Long Island -- have yet to be calculated.

Newsday reports 90 percent of districts there approved budgets in Tuesday's voting.

The New York State United Teachers union also found 92 percent of budgets passed.

Most tax increases were smaller than in past years thanks to a record $1.75 billion increase in state school aid to a total more than $20 billion. Many districts increased taxes at about the rate of inflation, or around 4 percent.
