AUBURN -- It took the Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education a mere half-hour to decide what to do about its 2008-09 proposed school budget defeated by voters Tuesday.
In a 7-1 vote, the board opted Wednesday for a re-vote, asking district taxpayers to authorize the original budget proposal of $66,490,371 with a 3.28 percent tax levy increase.
"This budget is fiscally responsible and the tax levy is exactly where it needs to be," board member Michael Stearns said. "This needs to stay right where it is and we have to get out and educate people."
Following a state-mandated timetable, the district will advertise the budget by June 3, hold a public hearing on the budget on June 10 and convene a vote on June 17.
Taxpayers appeared to have defeated the proposed budget Tuesday by a margin of 30 votes - 1,399-1,369 -- with 63 absentee and affidavit ballots left outstanding.
After the paper ballots were counted and the voting machines recanvassed Wednesday, district officials announced the budget had been officially defeated by three votes, 1,414-1,411.

Maybe we can get City Manager, Mr. Palesh, to offer his "wonderful insight" and make Auburn schools run more like a business, like Auburns "well oil machined" municipality...decreasing tax base, increasing costs across the board, but we need to close some fire stations, lay-off off a few city workers, and heck while where trying to save money, lets hire a bunch of people to actually increase the budget...I hope no one notices this.
With the population of Auburn steadily declining over the years, as well as businesses moving out/just shutting down, you'd think they could start cutting back permanently on personel. Like getting rid of wasted upper management who are sucking the pay of two or three teachers and only do a 1/4 of the work!!! We need less overpaid management "bums" and more willing to do the actual front line work of teachers and maintenance!!!

"Many districts increased taxes at about the rate of inflation, or around 4 percent."
Meaning EVERY district increased their budget in proportion to their needs and the current economy. Everything is going up for them as well, isn't it? Fuel costs? Insurance costs? Food costs?
The 3.28% tax increase was totally in line and acceptable. It basically amounts to what most dullards spend on cigarettes or lottery tickets in the course of a week. "

There you have it folks, another example of how irresponsible this board of education truly is. Instead of taking the budget and re working it and submitting another budget that takes the economic conditions into consideration they are going to submit the EXACT same budget. Pabis and Stearns, and the entire board demonstrate time and again how out of touch they are with our community.
I guarantee this time they will fight all the harder to ram this budget down your throats, I only pray that voter apathy does not have a factor in the passing of this irresponsible budget passing. Get out and vote people, call them write them tell them that they are wrong. Tell them that you will not tolerate another irresponsible tax hike strewn with wasteful spending. DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY,,, VOTE BECAUSE EVERY VOTE DOES MATTER "
