A pair of shows with elementary school casts are ready to take to the stage over the next two weeks.
Genesee Elementary students will set sail with “The Voyage Aboard the Charming Sally,” a musical based on the first theater troupe to come to America, with a public performance at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22. Casey Park Elementary students will perform “Mr. Bell's Magnificent Ringing Machine” next week with a public performance at 7 p.m. Friday, May 30.

Both productions are free and run about an hour. Each is followed by a reception in the cafeteria. The shows, under the direction of Barbara Murphy, assisted by Sara Fraher, are part of the Extended School Day Program.

May 30 also marks a return to the Auburn Public Theater of the local comedy troupe, The Baby Seal Club. Its current production, “The Freudian Clambake,” hopes to build on the success of the group's first endeavor, “The Going Out of Business Spectacular.” The performance is free and the curtain goes up at 8 p.m.

All three of the region's summer theaters are set to open their seasons June 4.

• The Merry-Go-Round Playhouse opens with “All Shook Up,” a play about a stranger who rides into a small town with a motorcycle, a guitar and a repertoire of songs by Elvis. Joe DiPietro's book borrows from Shakespeare. Should be quite a combination. Call 255-1785 for tickets and information.

• Cortland Repertory Theatre stages its own revue of pop music with “Eight Track: Songs of the Seventies.” Call (800) 427-6160 for more information or to order tickets.

• Former Syracuse Stage Artistic Director Robert Moss takes the reins at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca with its opening production, “The Overwhelming.” Set in Rwanda in 1994, the play tells the chilling tale of an American professor who unwittingly takes his family on a trip to Rwanda in the weeks leading up to the genocide. Hangar is once more offering a Pay-what-you-can performance at 7:30 p.m. June 11. For tickets or information call (607) 273-8588.

• And speaking of Syracuse Stage, “Menopause the Musical” is back for the third straight year, running from May 27 through June 29. Three previous cast members return, including the superb Liz Hyde. Call the box office at 443-3275.

More locally:

The Auburn Players present “Godspell” June 6 through 14. And The Jordan-Elbridge Community Theatre is holding auditions for “The Secret Garden” from 9 a.m. to noon June 7, for the role of a girl age 9 to 14, and from 12:30 to 4 p.m. the same day, for adults. Both auditions will be held at the J-E High School. The show will be performed in August. For information, contact director Drew Deapo at ddeapo@jecsd.org.

Regionally:

The Gifford Family Theatre in Syracuse brings the classic children's book, “Go Dog, Go!” to life this weekend through June 14 (445-4230). Port City Theater in Fulton offers “The Orphan Train” from May 30 through June 7 (598-8812).

And Salt City wraps up its production of the Joe Orton comedy, “What the Butler Saw” (475-9749, not for children.) The Kitchen runs the musical “Souvenir” from June 5 through 29 ((607) 272-0403).

Play nice.
