Union Springs takes second in Section IV

Eric Hlywa shot a 78 to lead the Union Springs boys golf team to a second place finish in the Section IV team championships in Marathon Monday.
The Wolves, who scored 421, earned their highest finish in sectionals since 1982. Elmira Notre Dame came in first, with 410 points. Hlywa's score earned him fourth overall in the field of 96 players.

Matt Cuff scored an 82, Tim Morabito and Michael Bean each carded an 85, while Austin Thomas shot a 91.

“I knew we'd have a shot second or third place,” Wolves coach Todd Salls said. “But we had a much better score than we expected, especially considering the elements, with the rain, sleet and snow.”

Next up for the Wolves is the IAC Championships at Soaring Eagle Golf Course.

Section III, Class C-2 playoffs

The Port Byron boys golf team finished seventh on a day that consisted of rain, wind, a wind chill of about 30 degrees and even some snowflakes at Barker Brook Golf Club in Oriskany Falls.

The Panthers were led by eighth graders Dan O'Hara and Andy Leary and freshman Dan Wilkinson.

Port Byron (7-7) will play next in the second annual Cayuga County Golf Tournament on May 30 at Meadowbrook Golf Course.

For the Warriors, who took fifth in the C-2 playoffs, Jake DeChick shot an 89 while advancing to the state qualifying round at Seven Oaks Country Club in Colgate Thursday.

Also leading the Warriors was Jason Ryan who scored a 91, Chris Johnson carded a 97, Matt Short earned a 103, Cody Fabian recorded a 106 and Drew Lane finished with a 111.

The Warriors finish their regular season at 7-6.

BASEBALL

Dryden 5, Moravia 4

Dillon Langtry paced the Blue Devils with two hits and one RBI, also pitching five innings with five strikeouts and allowing five hits and five runs, two earned.

Taylor Mackey also contributed two hits and one RBI, as he also threw one inning on the mound, posting one strikeout.

Justin Stanton also pitched one inning and recorded two strikeouts.

The Blue Devils only had five hits, as they gave up four runs in the fourth inning in part from two critical errors they made.

“That was the difference in the game,” Moravia head coach Rich Valentino said.

Moravia (12-10) travels to the IAC championship tournament at Hoy Field in Cornell University Thursday.

Port Byron 9, Jordan-Elbridge 7

The Panthers were behind 7-1 in the fifth and posted six in the sixth to take the win, propelling them to their first Section III playoff appearance in years.

Jake Bennett recorded the win on the mound for the Panthers, throwing five strikeouts, three walks while allowing six hits and three runs.

At the plate for Port Byron was Tyler Quanbeck, who earned two hits and two RBIs, Zach Kudla and D.J. Helmer both added one hit and an RBI, Bennett contributed two hits and Jamie Cuff finished with one hit.

Teddy Hart took the loss for the Eagles, posting one strikeout, three walks, allowing five hits and six runs.

On the mound for five innings for the Eagles, was Christian Berwind who had three strikeouts, one walk while allowing three hits and three runs.

Pacing Jordan-Elbridge at the plate was Colby Aver with three hits, Mike Ryan and Berwind each added two hits, Zach Frost contributed a hit and Eli Grauman ended with a double.

The Panthers (8-9) swing at Lafayette today.

SOFTBALL

Jordan-Elbridge 27, Port Byron 5

Jenn Gasparek pitched a complete six innings, recording seven strikeouts and one walk for the Eagles. At the plate, she was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs.

Leading the Eagles was Sarah Fordyce, who went 4-for-6 with three RBIs, three runs and two home runs.

Also leading for Jordan-Elbridge was Elizabeth Caspari going 2-for-6 adding two RBIs, six runs and one home run, Erika Peterson went 3-for-7 with one RBI and four runs scored, Lindsy Geery was 1-for-6 adding one RBI and three runs, Natalie Elking went 1-for-4 contributing an RBI and a run and Keelia McGuire was 1-for-5 recording one RBI and three runs.

In the pitching circle, for Port Byron was Britney Helmer who posted one strikeout and five walks in two innings. Melissa Deyo came in for four innings, throwing three strikeouts and four walks.

Pacing the Panthers was Shelby Gilbert who was 2-for-3 with one RBI, a double and a run, Ali Short went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run, Courtney Christina was also 2-for-3 with one RBI, a run and a home run and Kara Pitcher and Nica Dare also scored one run each.

The Panthers (5-11) play against Lafayette today.

Dryden 5, Moravia 4

Jessica Kehoe pitched for the Blue Devils, posting one walk, one hit-batter and allowed seven hits. At the plate, Kehoe went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Also at the plate for Moravia was Brandy O'Hara going 2-for-4 with a double and Kaylee Langtry went 1-for-3 contributing a sacrifice fly and an RBI.

The Blue Devils (4-14) await IAC Division III seedings.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

CNYCL League Meet

Auburn, 62, fourth place

Leading the Maroons was Abigail Reese, who finished second in the pentathalon and Marissa Rescott took second place in the pole vault.

Rescott also earned four ribbons in the meet for finishing in the top six in four different events, Patricia Fleischman ended with three ribbons.

“After winning only one league meet this season, getting fourth out of seven teams overall was pretty good for us,” Maroons head coach Michele Duprey said.

Auburn will send at least nine girls to the Section III meet in Rome on May 29, while Patricia Fleischman has qualified for the New York State Championships in the 400m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Watertown Immaculate Heart 10, Jordan-Elbridge 8

Emily Dillon led the Eagles posting four goals and one assist, Kate Dungey contributed one goal and one assist and Allison Donahue, Megan Cook and Kelsey Armani each added one goal.

Kelsey Richardson finished with 11 saves.

On Friday, the Eagles lost to Marcellus, 14-10. Pacing Jordan-Elbridge was Katie Austin with three goals and one assist, Dillon added two goals and an assist, Dungey posted a goal and an assist, Donahue earned two goals, Hanne Bailey tallied one goal and Marge Bailey ended one assist.

The Eagles finish the season at 2-14.
