AUBURN - Friends and family filled the banquet room of the Ukrainian National Club in Auburn on Sunday afternoon to show support for Patrick Townsend.
Townsend, a sophomore at Auburn High School, was struck by a car in October and has since been in a coma.

“Patrick loves basketball, and playing the guitar,” said his cousin, Andrea Rizzo-Kirschner, during the benefit. “He has tons of friends and a big family.”

Rizzo-Kirschner said that Townsend is currently in a treatment facility in Schenectady, where his mother, Jennifer Duke, has been vigilantly by his side.

“It has been pretty hard on the family,” Rizzo-Kirschner said. “But we are a big family and we have a lot of love. Christmas and other holidays are just as big as this benefit. We are lucky to have such a great family.”

Townsend's grandfather, Sam Rizzo, makes the trip to be by his grandson's side every Sunday, family members said.

The benefit, which included door prizes, raffles and a pasta dinner, will help to assist the family with medical, travel and living expenses incurred from Townsend's accident.

Music and even face painting for the little ones added to the afternoon's events.

“The doctors don't really say too much at this point,” Rizzo-Kirschner said. “But we try to keep optimistic. I have heard of people coming out of a coma after a long time.”

Rizzo-Kirschner said that the family is grateful for all of the caring support they have received through the tragedy and continue to be amazed by the caring gestures.

“I am truly amazed and humbled by the support of the community,” she said. “It has just blown my mind.”

“We are just very lucky to be a part of such a wonderful community,” said family friend Cindy Bouley. “We are lucky to be a part of such a kind and loving family.”
