Union Springs senior Mike Howell places second in the high jump at 6-0 at the Southern Cayuga Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
During the 2007 football season, the Union Springs senior ruptured his Achilles tendon and has had to endure a long rehabilitation to return to another sport he excels in - outdoor track and field.

Less than a year after the serious injury, he has returned to the track, wrapping up the regular season by running the 800-meter relay at the Southern Cayuga Invitational Saturday.

There were no team winners, only individual success on the day, which proved to be a great thing for many local runners from Southern Cayuga, Moravia, Union Springs, Jordan-Elbridge and Tyburn Academy. Twenty teams from Section III and Section IV competed in the meet.

Terry proved he has returned to form by defeating speedy Evan Bassett of Southern Cayuga, with a time of 2:05.86, by less than a second.

“I am so blessed to be able to be where I am right now,” Terry said, “It was nice to see it come down this way against my rival Evan. He always pushes me to do my best. It was such an excellent race overall. I have no reason not to smile today.”

Wolves' junior Vinnie Salato joined his teammate in the winner circle as he won the 100m (11.42) and placed second in the 200m (23.26) for the Wolves. Salato, Brandon Winter, Mike Howell and Scott Wood also took second place in the 400m relay (45.59). Howell ended up in second for the high jump (6-0) as well.

Wood finished third in the 110m hurdles (16.99), while Winter came in second in the 400m (53.59).

The Wolves freshman and sophomore sprint medley took third (4:14.53) - in the group were Zach Casper, Shane Groom, Anthony Hicks and John Carroll.

Stephen Townsend, Jon Moser, Antonio Rejman and J.D. Tyrrell placed third in the 400m relay (46.46) for Southern Cayuga. Townsend finished fourth in the 100m dash (11.68).

Farlow took third in the 3200m run (10:33.02). Mosher, Rejman, Barta and Bassett also ended up in second in the 1600m relay (3:38.78).

Patrick Redmond came in third for the novice 1600m (5:12.7).

“I was very pleased with Redmond,” said Bill Mullarney, Chiefs coach, and host of the meet.

“He took about 20 seconds off of his personal best in that event today. Some of the kids today did some great things with their times.”

Moravia's Logan Crandall came in first in the shot put (47-5), setting a new meet record for the event. He also finished third in the discus (110-3).

Jason Phillips took fourth place for the 1600m run (4:43.4), which also was a personal best for him.

“I was very proud of Jason,” Blue Devils coach Jan Hunsinger said. “He should be proud of himself, too.”

From Tyburn Academy, Jack Kavanagh came in 18th in the 1600m (5:27.55) and 17th in the 800m (2:23.3).

Cody Stanton won the 3200m run for Jordan-Elbridge (10:13.49).

Also for the Eagles, Tom Badman, Nick Byrnes, Tom Poppe and Dylan Kirk finished in second place for the freshman and sophomore sprint medley (4:12.63) and Jake Griffin came in third for the 400m (53.75). Jeff Donohue took second in the 1600m (4:43.01), behind Watkins Glen' Jonathan Fazzary.

“Cody Stanton and Jeff Donohue had great times today,” Eagles coach Todd Wolfanger said. “Donohue set a personal best.”

Also achieving major success for the Eagles, Nicole Darling set a meet and personal record in the 800m, as she took first (2:25.04).

Kim Foltz, Maggie Nuber, Tia Segretto and McKenzie Williams finished first in the freshman and sophomore sprint medley (4:44.37).

Katie Darling broke her own school record while taking second in the 200m (26.73), and Lyndsay Hollis also ended up in second place in the 400m hurdles (1:09.71).

Katie Darling, Nicole Darling, Foltz and Hollis placed second in the 1600m relay (4:16.03). Eloise Rogers took fourth in the shot put (28-1) for the Eagles.

“The Darlings and Lyndsay Hollis all had outstanding times today,” Eagles girls coach Ben Alexander said. “I felt all of the girls though had great times -they were fast.”

Miriam Larson-Koester easily won the discus (104-3) and shot put (33-7) for the Chiefs. Kathryn Carter, Kate Driscoll, Nellie Slocum and Allyson Murphy placed second in the freshman and sophomore sprint medley (5:20.49), while Nicole Hoey took fourth in the 400m dash (1:04.6).

“Miriam did some great things today,” Mullarney said.

Wolves senior Alyssa Dean took third in the long jump (14-6).

Moravia's Claire Hunsinger finished fourth in the triple jump (33-10), which also gave her a new school record for the event. In the high jump, she took third with a jump of 4-8.

Emily Dusseau ended up taking second in the 100m (13.18) for the Blue Devils, while Aimee Glenister, Alicia McLaughlin, Julia Babcock and Dusseau came in fourth for the 400m relay (54.75).

Overall, the weather cooperated and the meet was again a success.

“I got so much help from everyone,” Mullarney said.

“The boosters here at Southern Cayuga, our golf team, parents and even Union Springs' coach Mark Gaffney. It was fantastic to receive so much help like that. Without them, this wouldn't have been possible.”

The Chiefs, Blue Devils and Wolves now turn their attention to the IAC meet on Thursday. and Friday.
