Top-seeded Cortland defeated No. 3 Rensselaer, 6-2, in the final game of the NCAA, Division III Regional Tournament at Falcon Park Saturday.
The win earned the Red Dragons a spot in the NCAA Division III World Series, which begins Thursday in Appleton, Wis.
The Red Dragons starting pitcher, Nicolas Blanco, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament while Anderson Gardner, Ryan Hooper, Joey Russo and Mike Zaccardo were all named to the 2008 NCAA New York Regional All-Tournament Team.
Blanco started for the Red Dragons, who have won 39 straight games, and he went 8 2-3 innings to pick up the win.
The junior gave up just four hits allowing only two runners to score, while striking out six. J.J. Potrikus pitched 1-3 of an inning, throwing four pitches for a strikeout.
Heading into the ninth inning, the Red Dragons were up 2-1, but then got four insurance runs - three of them with two outs.
Joe Zongol picked up the loss for the Red Hawks, as he went the full nine innings, scattering seven hits, six runs allowed, walked four and fanning eight.
The Red Dragons tallied seven hits, while the Red Hawks managed just four. Each team committed two errors.
Eastern Connecticut was knocked out of the tournament by the Red Hawks 14-13 in extra innings earlier in the day.
Rensselaer scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning and were able to hold off the Warriors.
