Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To the 25th anniversary of the Cayuga Wine Trail, which is kicking off its celebration this week.
Though the Cayuga County side of the trail remains relatively undeveloped in terms of wineries open to the public, there’s no doubt the county and the city of Auburn have benefited greatly from the overall growth of this wine trail and all of the trails in the Finger Lakes region.

This milestone is one of many reasons it should be an exciting year for the local tourism industry.

MISS: To a local company facing $44,100 in fines from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA has cited Auburn Metal Processing with 22 “serious and repeat” safety violations as part of its probe into the death of a worker at that plant last fall. The company had also been fined by OSHA prior to the accident.

There’s no doubt that some jobs pose greater risks than others, but all employees deserve to be working in the safest conditions possible for their line of work.

HIT: To all of the people and organizations responsible for bringing a moving exhibit to the Cayuga Museum.

“ The Lives They left behind: Suitcases From a State Hospital Attic,” made its debut last weekend in Auburn. This exhibit provides a revealing look at lives of patients at the former Willard Psychiatric Center, and it shows us how fragile life can be.

The generosity of First Niagara Bank, The Peer Networking Group of Central New York and Options for Independence helped bring this program to the museum. It runs through April 20, and anyone with an interest in the human condition should make time to see it.

HIT: To the Skaneateles High School boys hockey team, which captured the sectional title over the weekend.

It’s been a remarkable season for the Lakers, and it will continue for at least one more game as the state tournament comes to Skaneateles on Saturday.
