HIT: Workers this week are smoothing over the Route 5 railroad crossing near County House Road in Sennett.
The extreme dip in the roadway at that crossing has been responsible for innumerable car repairs for area drivers that have been bumping over the tracks there for years. Many drivers have gotten in the habit of driving on the shoulder there, and that's not the safest way to maneuver at any speed.
Minor traffic delays this week are a small price to pay for this needed improvement.
MISS: To a fire at a warehouse on McMaster Street in Auburn on Tuesday. The fire was accidentally started when sparks ignited a box of old books and roofing material when workers were cutting a metal pipe.
Auburn firefighters were able to put out the blaze under tough circumstances since their hoses had to cross railroad tracks. They were able to douse it in about 90 minutes.
Fortunately, no one was hurt. Just as important, the blaze did not spread and damage other property.
HIT: Some of the top teams in NCAA Division III baseball are playing at Auburn's Falcon Park this week in regional playoffs.
The top-notch facility has hosted regionals many times since it opened in 1995, and we hope the playoffs return year after year, as teams, families and fans of the college teams are spending money in Auburn's motels and restaurants.
MISS: To a blackout on the city's east end on Wednesday that cost some businesses thousands of dollars.
In tough economic times, every sale means something, so when a business has to close even for a short time, it's not good news.
The blackout was caused by a squirrel that damaged a transformer. Overall, about 2,100 NYSEG customers were without power for almost 90 minutes.
