PORT BYRON #- The congregation of United Methodist Church takes pride in being able to ensure that the church and its members are taken care of.
Bake sales and pasta dinners that are hosted throughout the year are an example of the church's devotion to a number of causes.
The first rummage-yard and bake sale, held Friday afternoon, helped benefit the church's campership fund, used to send children to Bible camp at Casowasco every summer.
Jodi Yale, a church member, helped organize the sale.
“We wanted to try to do something a little different,” Yale said. “We had some items left over from a rummage sale we had a while ago that we were going to donate to the Salvation Army. But then we came up with the idea of doing this sale and we got more items donated and it just grew from there.”
From coffee mugs to cookbooks to fresh baked cookies and muffins, the sale boasts a little bit of everything, all made possible through the generous support of members and neighbors of the church.
“It is really nice to see this support,” Yale said. “It helps a lot and we really like that so many people want to help out. We asked a lot of the ladies in the church to do the baking and we have people donating items and people volunteering to help run the sale, it is really nice to see this kind of support.”
Dawn Waldron, who lives right next door to the church, said that she was planning on having her own yard sale, but when she heard about the church fundraiser, she wanted to lend some support.
“Once we heard that this was going to be a benefit to help send kids to camp we gladly wanted to donate,” Waldron said. “It feels good to be able to help out like this.”
Yale said that the Bible camp is designed for children between the ages of 10 and 18 and that campers can attend for three days up to a whole week between the months of June and August.
And that the camp has numerous benefits.
“It helps teach fellowship,” Yale said. “I think it helps get more kids interested. They learn a lot of Bible stories and things like that and I think it helps get them more interested in coming to church or being here for Sunday school.”
Through their fundraising efforts, Yale said that the church usually sends approximately 10 children to camp each year.
“It is kind of expensive,” Yale said. “We try to send at least one child and cover all their expenses and then give money to help offset the cost for a few other children.”
Lending a little support to this worthy cause got a lot of people out to the church for the sale.
“I love the church,” Ruth Wethey of Port Byron, said. “This benefits kids and I think that is a really good cause. So I'm glad to be here to help out.”
Yale said that over the summer the church may host another sale or dinner to continue to raise funds for the campership fund.
