ELBRIDGE - “I just want them to have fun.”
That's been this season's theme and the goal for Jordan-Elbridge boys golf coach Dan Bondgren.
Despite the 212-265 loss to Westhill at Millstone Golf Course Friday, the Eagles are having fun. Freshman Ryan Conroy led the Eagles with a 48 in the match.
Conroy was filling in for the Eagles No. 1 and No. 2 guys that were unable to play.
“I was very pleased with our performance today,” Bondgren said. “Especially when you have guys that come in and fill in like they did.”
Eagles' senior Liz Gleason ended her day with a 59. Juniors Justin Taylor came in with a 47 and David Ford carded a 59, while Jason Manrow finished with a 52.
“I felt I did pretty good today,” Taylor said. “I kept my head down which was key for me.”
Conroy on the other hand, strived through the pressure of having to fill in the top role for the Eagles. He perfected the third hole par three, but was not at all pleased with his chipping on the day.
“I will definitely go to the green and chip for practice tomorrow,” Conroy said. “I also have to keep my head down and not worry about bad holes.”
Conroy has been on the golf team for three seasons. He didn't play in any matches his first season, but did practice with the team. Now he's one of the leaders of the young Eagles team.
“I'm looking forward to next year,” Conroy said. “I'll be one of the top golfers on the team.”
That's when Bondgren's goal comes into play. Despite not winning many matches, the Eagles are in high spirits on every course they play.
“I want to teach the kids the game of golf,” Bondgren said. “If they can learn the rules of golf and have fun, then I feel that I've accomplished a lot. Golf is a game in which you can play with your family, or whoever, and whenever.”
The Eagles have made progress this season. The scoring gap between them and their opponents has significantly decreased,
“It's an accomplishment when I look at our scores from last year to this year and see the improvement,” Bondgren said. “I think as years keep passing we will keep getting better. We may not be at the level of Skaneateles or Cazenovia next year, but we might be able to compete with the other teams. I just want us to be competitive year in and year out.”
The medalist of the event was Westhill's Dylan Jenkins with a 39. Brandan Moran shot a 41 for the Warriors, while Zach French scored with a 44 and Mike Wild carded a 43. Joe O'Connor rounded out the team scoring with a 45.
The Eagles now turn their attention to Marcellus for their last match of the year Tuesday.
“Practice won't be any different for us,” Bondgren said. “We might play the back nine instead of front during practice. I basically just send the kids out and have them work on their game. They know what is wrong with it and they work on that. I also do my best to work on some kinks they have.”
