Getting a monumental win down the stretch before the postseason is what every team strives for in the regular season.
The Auburn softball achieved just that when it scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, upsetting the CNYCL American division champion West Genesee, 4-3 Thursday at Clifford Field.
Key hits in the big inning were an RBI single by Stefanie Spinney and a two-run single by Shannon McCormick, who has racked up 24 hits so far this season.
Lauren Fedyshyn and McCormick led the offense with two hits apiece with McCormick adding a triple and Kelly Grinnell contributing one RBI.
The winning pitcher for the Maroons was Brittney Babcock, who scattered six hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Babcock was supported by an outstanding defense that included key plays by Sarah Green and Maggie Race as well as a game ending shoestring catch by Fedyshyn with the tying run on third base.
The Maroons not only have the pride of beating the first place team, but they also avenged a 9-0 shutout loss to the Wildcats earlier in the season.
“This was an incredible game,” Maroons head coach Bob Lee said. “I've been here seven years and this might have been the biggest win we've had.”
Auburn (11-8) hosts Oswego Monday in the Maroons' Senior Night under the lights before making up a game with Central Square on Wednesday.
Section III, Class AA seedings are announced May 27.
